The Struggles of Not Having a Syllabus Week

Welcome back to school everyone! Now that you can say that you’ve made it through another college break without killing your family, it's time to saddle up and make it through another semester of college without questioning whether you would make a good stripper or not. At the beginning of the semester, I always hear my friends talking about syllabus week. What in the world is syllabus week? Now I know that it’s a common saying amongst college kids that refers to the first week back where there is no work and limited responsibilities. However, what my friends don’t realize, is that I’m lucky if my professors even read through the syllabus at all, let alone give me a week to digest it. The first week for me isn’t as stressful as say week 6, BUT syllabus “week” isn’t all peaches and cream either. That being said, let’s go through what it is like not having a syllabus week.

1. Pain

So, after having a month off where all you do is sleep and binge watch Netflix, it’s kind of painful to have to sit through an hour and a half lecture the very first day back. You have zero concentration, and the attention span of a squirrel. So not having a syllabus 20 minutes let alone a syllabus week is a very painful.

2. Frustration

WHY ARE YOU LECTURING ON DAY ONE? Why are all my friends out and about while I’m sitting here reading about Aristotle and his take on government? I want to have fun too!

3. Un-organization

Honestly, I never get my schedule set in stone until week two, so the fact that none of the classes that I ever chose have a syllabus week makes for a very unorganized time, for both my planner and my brain.

4. Stress

This probably comes from the fact that I’m unorganized, and frustrated, but not having a syllabus week is the most stressful thing ever. I’m not mentally and emotionally prepared to do hard core work, but yet, I get bombarded anyway.

5. Joy

Even after all of the complaining, not having a syllabus week is kind of fun because you get back in the grove of things. On top of that, you start to learn some pretty interesting things.

Overall, Not having a syllabus week can be painful, but there are some positive things to consider, like learning.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
