9 Struggles Every WIU Student Knows Too Well

Everything you know to be too true.

9 Struggles Every WIU Student Knows Too Well

1. "You go to Western? Isn't that, like, in the middle of nowhere?"

Yes. Yes it is. Telling a non Western student that you went to the bar last Monday night to sing karaoke is astonishing to them. But, what else were we supposed to do? Want a new article of clothing? Stick to online shopping, sweetie. In the mood for some Chipotle? Looks like you'll be planning a road trip to Peoria!

2. Q-lot

Oh, the infamous Q-lot. Every WIU student has had to walk through this wind tunnel at some point in their college career. Time your travel plans accordingly, because what seems like miles is in your way.

3. Macomb Winters

Harsh winters call for icy conditions, but apparently nobody knows what salt is here. Walking to class becomes an everyday struggle. Always have your phone ready for some funny videos of people falling.

4. Can we talk about the potholes?

Driving from one side of campus to the other is a bumpy ride. Not to mention, driving from one side of town to the other. Can we figure something out about this, city of Macomb?

5. Are the freshmen dorms even on campus?

As nice as it is to have all of the freshmen at their own side of campus, it is a struggle because they are so far away from everything. Because the cafeteria doesn't serve breakfast or food on Friday and Saturday, walking all the way across campus is not the most fun thing. Ordering Jimmy Johns is just so much easier.

6. No decent coffee

I'd invest in a Keurig, if you do not want to stand in line at Einstein's for hours, or go to dividends to get coffee that tastes like everything but coffee. One time, I had a cappuccino that tasted like hotdogs...

7. If you ain't Greek then who are you?

Nothing against fraternities or sororities, but these groups are a majority of WIU. If you are not Greek, then you are an athlete. If you are not an athlete, then you are nothing.

8. WiFi

At Western, WiFi is non existent. It is worse in the library than it is in the dorms... Weird. Invest in a router of your own.

9. Can't purchase alcohol on Sundays

Want to partake in a silly Sunday? Gotta drive 20 minutes to the Good Hope gas station to purchase your alcohol. Having a dry county on Sundays can definitely be a struggle sometimes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
