Brown aunties and uncles are notorious for gossiping and being invasive by asking us uncomfortable questions. Personal space, privacy, and secrecy are typically forfeited during gatherings with family and friends. Here are some of the questions and situations we face on the regular and how we tend to feel about it.

1. "How are your grades?"

Typically, this is the icebreaker for any conversation and let's be real here, nobody wants to talk about that, especially not with parents who aren't your own.

2. "Do you want to be a doctor? That is a very good profession; I really think you should pursue this."

Thank you for this information, I have just had a random epiphany about this!!

3. "You have lost a lot of weight. Are you not eating enough?"

I don't want to listen to weight advice from aunties who look like Teletubbies.

4. "You have gained a lot of weight. Are you eating too much?"

Food is life, leave me alone.

5. "Can you guide my son/daughter through some school stuff?"

I don't think that I should be a voice of reason for any young kids when I myself am drowning in confusion.

6. "OMG! You became so much older than the last time I saw you!"

Thanks for realizing how time works, I have been struggling to figure it out.

7. "When do you want to get married? You are reaching the age to think about this."

I'm 21......

8. "You have become so dark."

I am proud of my melanin.

9. "That girl shows so much skin."

My jeans and t-shirt cover more skin than your sari does??

10. "My kids would never do that."

Your children are completely different people behind closed doors. Who are you to judge another kid when you don't really know your own?

All jokes aside, many kids including myself are judged and scrutinized by other adults. We are often compared to other people, when in reality, we all hide behind this facade we have put up our whole lives in order to look "decent." Bottom line: we never asked for your unwarranted opinions and remarks, so please don't bother giving them to us.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
