7 Struggles Of Being An Art Major
Caroline Casey

As an art major these are some of the things that I am asked on a daily basis. When it comes to answering questions about your own art, being an art major, or just art in general you already have the answers ready to repeat over and over. Not to mention, half of the time their questions are something you can't answer! So for all you art majors out there, I hope you can relate to these frequently asked questions about art.

1. “What is your homework, coloring?”

First off, it's called drawing not coloring, and yes my homework is drawing. No, I do not draw with crayons or sketch with Ticonderoga pencils. My drawing took just as long as that 500 word paper you had to write, probably longer. Not to mention when you have major artist block and cannot think of anything creative to put down on the page.

2. “You must save so much money because you don’t have to buy textbooks.”

HA! Wrong again. I may not have a $250 textbook for each class but I bet you never knew that one tube of oil paint can run up to $40 (and that's a small tube). Add into that the cost of canvas, stretcher bars, panels, paint brushes and drawing materials, it adds up. Next time you're in Michaels, just look at the price tags.

3. “Hey can you paint or draw me something?”

The amount of times I get this is astonishing. Most of the time I just respond with yes, and despite their constant begging and pleading we all know, they never get a drawing or painting.

4. “So, are you like really good at drawing and painting?”

Well I am not trying to brag but, I am an art major.

5. “Wait you really had to draw a naked man?”

Yes, it's all part of the job. Figure drawing is an experience and no its not awkward. Well, it is awkward for the first 30 seconds, but after that you are too busy trying to draw an entire man in two minutes, its harder than you think. All you have to do now is figure out where you want to display your large drawing of a nude man.

6. “Can you draw my next tattoo?”

Yes, but are you sure you want to trust me with something that is going to be on your body the rest of your life?

7. “Do you like being an art major?”

Yes, being an art major is an experience, something that I look forward to do everyday and something I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
