Stop Using The R-Word

It is 2016, and there are many more words we can use.

Stop Using The R-Word

I absolutely cannot believe that we are in the year 2016 and I still hear the word "retarded" used in an offensive way in conversation. Being a college student, I hear people use some nasty language, but nothing angers me more than this word.

The thing about it is, there are so many alternative words to use. You want to impress your friends with your extensive knowledge of words? Then do not use this one. Do not use it because you never know who could be listening. I don't know about you, but I would feel absolutely terrible if I used this word, and the person I was talking to had a mentally handicapped child. But even if they didn't and they weren't offended, I could not imagine ever using this word.

If you are ever at a loss for words and are tempted to use this one, please don't. I will even provide you with some substitute words to use when you are in a bind. Here are some synonyms for this word:

crazy, ridiculous, illogical, pointless, uncool, irrational, absurd, trivial, idiotic, silly, senseless, careless, strange, dull, heartless, stupid, ignorant, dumb, ill-considerate, childish...

The list goes on.

The moral of the story is, please do not use this word. It is offensive, and the use of it is really not necessary. Whenever I hear it, I know that we still have a long way to go in this society.

Not only should you not use this word, but if you hear someone else say it, call them out. Let them know that you are offended by it or uncomfortable with them using it in an improper way. If they do not know they are being offensive than they cannot change their ways. I recently called someone out for using this word, and I was proud of myself for doing so.

I think that we can do our best to stop this word in 2016. There are many more words in our vocabulary to use, so let's use them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
