It's a fact that students hate homework. Even after years of practice, getting an assignment accomplished at home is a gross form of punishment.

College is no different. Professors pile on all types of homework, but wait- there's more.

There's online homework that requires expensive access codes, there are online discussions where you all call each other "insightful" and try to get that minimum word limit, and there are fifty page reading assignments that may or may not be quizzed on (fun fact: the quizzes usually happen on the days you don't read).

It's garbage. Absolute garbage. I get that we're learning something, but the hours that professors expect you to put in outside of school is obscene.

We all know the drill for college students today even if our professors (who probably only worked a summer job now and then to pay for their tuition) don't.

Most college students have jobs, most college students have to live off campus because on campus is painfully expensive, most college students try to take extra-curricular activities because we are completely aware of our excruciating effort to get a higher education might not result in an actual job unless we know eight foreign languages and can tap dance on top of having a masters degree.

So why did my sophomore biology professor tell me that I should study two hours for every hour that I'm in class?!

If I'm in class for three hours and I go home and study for six hours and then I go to work for six hours and then I do extra-curricular activities for three hours and THEN I cry for one hour because everything sucks....that leaves me with five hours to sleep.

I guess I should cut back on my crying...

In any case, students don't need to spend X amount of hours outside of class for every hour they're in class. Professors need to figure out how to teach students in the amount of time they're allotted and probably come up with some kind of basic assignment where we actually apply our knowledge to show them if they're doing their job right.

If we already have to study for tests and we already do research when we get projects, isn't that enough application of the material we're learning? Why doll out tedious assignments that half the class won't do anyway?

Either make homework practical or don't assign it at all.
