Since middle school, I had been telling everyone that my dream job was to be a journalist. Every time I told an adult who inquired about my future, I received wary looks and was told that, “I would never find a job.” I believed them and started college undeclared so that I could explore a major that would help me succeed in society.
Majors in communication is constantly under fire by people who believe that we are making the wrong decisions in our lives. Why go to school for a simple hobby when you can get a degree in something with a guaranteed job in the sciences or math?
It’s time we stop telling children and young adults that the world of communications (and even art and music) is a “bad idea.” Nothing makes me more nervous than the thought of taking two semesters worth of math and science classes. These classes are my weak points, not my forte, and definitely not my major.
If some people are more technical and some more artistic, why is it always expected that the artistic people should be technical too, but rarely vice versa.
Majoring in communication is seen in society as “the easy way” through college, but I see it as nothing but challenging. If a calculus major was asked to take art classes, she would suffer just as much as I do in the maths and sciences.
Being an advertising major takes me to my limits. It tests my writing and reading skills as well as lets me spark up my creative side and my quick wit. I get to meet creative students and professors who help me grow mentally along the way. I have learned more than I ever could by doing hands-on projects instead of studying for relentless tests.
I go to college so that I can find a career path that will help me have a fulfilling life in the future. The one thing advertising has taught me is to never look down on someone else’s major. I would not want someone to feel as I have felt growing up being criticized for my choice of studies. I recognize that everyone has their own personal strengths and weaknesses and that it is not fair to categorize certain careers as superior to others.
I love being an advertising major, everyday I get to explore what I will be doing in my career field and have felt at peace with my decision ever since.
