There is a lot of apprehension about the latest executive order issued by President Obama regarding gun laws. Basically, these orders make it so that anyone who sells a gun has to have a license and anyone who buys a gun needs to get a background check. Supporters are calling these laws common sense, but some believe it is an attack on their second amendment right to bear arms (ironically, most people that I have seen that are against gun laws are in support of Trump's proposal to kick out Muslims, which violates the First Amendment).
It honestly doesn’t make sense why people are so upset when this is definitely not the first time the government has implemented laws that have contradicted our basic rights in order to protect citizens.
Nearly 37,000 people die in road crashes each year in the US . Because of this, we have regulations and tests in order to get your driver’s license. We also are mandated to wear a seatbelt, or else we could be fined. All vehicles need to be registered by the state in order to be used on the road.
Four airplanes were hijacked, killing a reported 3,000 people on September 11, 2001, and so we have to go through metal detectors and customs to get on a plane.
Alcohol is known to kill about 88,000 people a year and can damage brain growth (). So you have to be 21 to consume and show ID to purchase alcoholic drinks. You also need a license to sell alcohol.
Cigarette smoking is responsible for 480,000 deaths each year and so, again, you have to be 18 to purchase them and need to show an ID. Vendors need a license.
You even need an ID to get into an R-rated movie, and I don’t think anyone has even died from this yet.
At least 32,000 people die due to gun violence in America each year. In 2013, that number spiked to nearly 34,000 . However, before the executive order, anyone could buy a gun, without barely any regulation whatsoever.
Getting a gun, or any lethal weapon, should not be easier than getting into an R-rated movie.
Also, the executive order does not give anyone the right to take your gun. The only people who can’t own guns under these orders are felons, people with domestic violence charges and people legally deemed as “mentally defective.” So…people who should not have guns anyway.
I realize that people who are opposed to the new laws have probably either avoided reading this or have stopped by now (if you haven’t, way to be open-minded!). And those of you who are reading this have probably already supported the new laws before opening the article. Now you have credible stats to use when someone starts freaking out about how Obama is going to take all the guns and how our rights are being violated.
So, don’t worry, you can keep your guns. Just try to understand that sometimes, when a weapon is being used to kill mass amount of people for no reason, the government is supposed to respond. It’s kind of the president’s job to respond. It's OK. Remain calm. Let him do what he was elected to do.
And yes, gun laws won't stop some criminals from getting guns illegally. But they don't mean that responsible citizens will be disarmed, and it doesn't mean the government shouldn't do anything to try to help the issue. If one life is saved because of these laws, it will all be worth it.
