Where is the maturity?

Stop Disrespecting People Just Because Their Views Don't Match Yours

There comes a time where we all need to step back and realize, as human beings, what is going on in our country. While we all have different views, we need to be able to respect one another and have an understanding when it comes to our lives and where our views come from.

The truth is: If you can't talk to someone respectfully about their political views, then you aren't mature enough to talk about them in general.

No one should be disrespected for having opposing political views, even if you don't agree with them. People shouldn't be scared to share their views because they think someone will come at them and attack them in a negative manner. That's not how it should work. While, yes we all have different views, disrespecting one another creates a huge divide in our country and it won't be fixed until this disrespect stops.

Personally, I don't share my political views because as a journalist that goes against the code of ethics. However, even if I did want to, I would be scared to. I see so many people that say "you have a right to your own opinion... unless." That's not how it works. There shouldn't be a circumstance in which you aren't able to have a right to your own opinion. Everyone has that right. But to treat someone poorly or look at them differently because they have different views than you? That's just immature and makes no sense. How are some people allowed to have a right to their opinion, but people with the opinions that those others disagree with don't have a right? Nope. That's not fair.

I've lost so many people in my life because we have different political views, or I was looked down on or judged for having views that weren't part of the public majority. As long as I am not disrespecting any other human being, or going against moral ethics, why should I be judged for having opposing views? Why are people allowed to disrespect me because I have different views? But if I were to disrespect those same people disrespecting me, I would be the one in the wrong, because they're allowed to disrespect me. Right? Isn't that the logic?

The fact of the matter is, no one should be disrespecting anyone for having different views. Everyone DOES have a right to their own opinions and views, and they are allowed to have those views. They're allowed to have them and be respected for them as long as they aren't disrespecting another human being. If I'm being honest, I will never understand why there is such a disrespect between both political parties. Neither party can accept the fact that we all have different views and that it is okay to have different views, but why does each party have to disrespect each other just because of different views?

So a conservative supports Trump, why does a liberal have to judge that person as a racist and misogynist, without even knowing them? The liberal made an assumption just because they are a Trump supporter when really they know nothing about that conservative. So a liberal supports abortions, why does a conservative have to judge that person as a murderer, without even knowing them? The conservative made an assumption just because they support abortions when really they know nothing about that liberal. It happens between both parties, so not one party can say they don't do it when they do. And that's not to say every single person in that political party is like that. There are plenty of people within both parties that are able to respect each other and try to understand the different views and opinions, so they can learn. And why won't everyone do that?

I am part of one political party, but personally I do enjoy listening to different views. Whether I agree with them or not, I enjoy listening to the other side so I can learn from it and come up with a better understanding of everything. I wish I could see people respect each other, even for having different views. But I'm afraid I'll never live to see that day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
