Dear Freshman, Please Stop Complaining

Dear Freshman,

As college freshman begin to move in all around the country, there has been a common theme I've been seeing. This has been trending all over Facebook with groups created by parents and students. And the hot topic of this year is living without air conditioning.

Now, before I go any further let me just say, I have been there. My freshman year I lived in one of the oldest dorms on campus, and I survived to tell you my story today.

I understand. It outright sucks. Going back to your dorm and sitting in a sauna, trying to concentrate on work without melting. Don't even get me started on trying to sleep. But it will get better.

The heat right now may seem unbearable, but there are many resources on campus to help. The student centers and libraries are usually open until midnight, and they even have AC. Take some friends over to one and just sit and hang out for a while. You'll feel a lot better.

Some of you may be wondering why you have to live in a dorm without AC while other classmates get to live in brand new dorms. It's something I still wonder to this day. Just the luck of the draw, but you are one of the lucky ones.

Take this opportunity of living in a dorm without AC to open your door. You'll get to meet the people on your floor, and people will most likely come into your room to talk if they see your door open.

Another thing is newer dorms don't have communal bathrooms. Yes, they are the most disgusting things on Earth, but you get to know your floor really well there. There's always gossip or simply just getting to talk to someone you haven't before while brushing your teeth.

I would not have made the friends I did if all of our doors weren't open. As a freshman who knew no one, I wouldn't have felt comfortable knocking on someone's door asking if they wanted to hang out. I never had to do that in my old dorm.

Living in my dorm with AC this year, I don't know my neighbors. I haven't even seen most of them. Nobody has their door open, and we all keep to ourselves. I miss the socializing aspect of my old dorm.

We have all survived without living in AC. It may seem like the end of the summer, but I promise you it's not. You will come out on the other side when the dorms cool down...in November.

So Freshman, please stop complaining. Those of us who have been there had no sympathy. The heat will break soon, and you'll be complaining that it's too cold because the heat doesn't work that well either.

This whole experience will only make you appreciate the AC in your dorm for next year. Trust me, everything will be okay.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
