How SBU Eliminating Theatre Arts Made Me Question My Choice

How SBU Eliminating Theatre Arts Made Me Question My Choice
Samantha Montes

I applied to 16 or 17 different colleges throughout New York State. Every college I applied to I had an intended major of either advertising, communications, marketing, and journalism. Making sure that whatever school I ended up in had my major. Due to my financial aid award, horrendous high school GPA, and dorms with easy access to home I ended up at Stony Brook. Stony Brook has the School of Journalism and the School of Business but no Marketing major. No Communications major. No Advertising major. No Public Relations major. So I chose Journalism and a minor in Marketing (I would double major in both if possible). But as a Journalism major, I don’t feel so comfortable here. Aside from meeting the very comforting staff and exciting professors (Jonathan Sanders being my favorite) I still wonder why I’m here. This is a school that will no longer provide Theatre Arts as a major and minor option. Everyone around me is talented in mathematics and chemistry while I’m just good at writing. It’s really all I plan to do for the rest of my life.

But why care if I’m not a Theatre Arts major? Who goes to Stony Brook to major/minor in Theatre Arts?

Because I’m not interested in becoming a doctor or an engineer and know there are others like me who seek careers in the arts. Coming from someone who hoped that the offered digital media classes would help me with what I want to specialize in the future. How about the people whose best option was Stony Brook? What happens to them?

The fact that Dean Sacha Kop decided to eliminate Theatre Arts really bothers me. You displaced students, leave faculty jobless, and have no comments to say? Where is the money invested into Theatre Arts going? Why does Humanities have to suffer at the expense of making this school known for research?

I’m still questioning if this is the place I should be and if I made the right choice on May 1st, 2016. There are too many unanswered questions on behalf of Stony Brook representatives and I’m disappointed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
