After years of mega success, Steps stepped away and disbanded in 2001 at a high point in their career. The group was formed in 1997 with members Lee Latchford-Evans, Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian "H" Watkins. They quickly reached superstardom status through their intoxicating brand of catchy disco-fueled dance pop. At their height back then, Steps had a record-setting amount of chart-topping singles - which at that time was a feat only surpassed by the Beatles. But alas all good things must come to an end. And it did...at least for a moment. After the departure of Watkins and Richards who went on to form H + Claire, the group broke up in December 2001. A Steps reformation happened in 2011. And now they’re officially back again in 2017 with their show-stopping “Scared of the Dark” single.
Produced by Carl Ryden and Brian Rawling, “Scared of the Dark” starts off as a beautiful ballad with lead vocals from Richards. It quickly and rightfully transforms into an absolute, unabashed hands-in-the-air disco anthem - which is exactly what we want from Steps. Coming on strong, the song is full of powerful disco dance beats and orchestral strings with dynamic lyrics mainly performed by Richards and Tozer with Latchford-Evans, Scott-Lee and Watkins backing them up. Ryan and fellow "Scared of the Dark" co-writer Fiona Bevan step out with perfect lyricism for the dance floor opus. And yes...powered by an over-the-top pop-disco sound, the chorus is simple yet infectious: “Don't let the the darkness come and hold me...I need someone 'cause I can't be lonely tonight.”
“Scared of the Dark” is prime for the electronic dance music scene of today. Even though it’s not in style with the current EDM sound of 2017, it is still amazing. It’s dramatic. It’s bold. It’s fantastic. With all of the recent trends in electronic dance music, it’s time to get back to basics. Disco.
