The sun is shining. The beach is breezy. The neighbors aren't nagging. It's SUMMER. But you're stuck in doors. Why? Because the bills need to be paid.
Things are expensive, and we, the not-very-rich people of the world, need to work. We are stuck in doors while children and others are outside breathing in the cool air and tanning with the bright sun. To put it simply, it sucks. Who wouldn't want to be frolicking in the sand instead of being stuck behind a register all day? Remember when you were 9 and you were building sand castles and playing at the beach all day? Now you're 19 or 49 and telling a customer, for the 4th time, that the item is not on sale and therefore, they should either decide to buy it or find something else that better suits their needs. It's annoying.
But here's why we do it.
For the older generations, you want food and shelter. In fact, you NEED food and shelter. You don't take the day off to go to the beach because you have mouths to feed. You have responsibilities. You deal with the rude customer and the spill in aisle 4 because your job is important. It supplies you with income to buy your necessities. Keep on going. You're a hero, even if the customer doesn't think so.
For the younger generation: College is expensive. Cell phones are expensive. car insurance is expensive. Everything is expensive. Even if you don't pay for all of the above, everything and anything you want is expensive. Even if your parents give you all you need, sometimes it might not be all that you want. Shoes, makeup, transportation, and food are all expensive.
You are indoors because you are either paying for things on your own so you need to, or you're saving the money for a later time. There's a reason you're dealing with bad returns and snobby customers. Whether it's paying for college or your closet, you are working towards a goal. Keep at it. The experience will help, and so will the money. This job is providing you with the opportunity to build up your résumé. It is giving you the opportunity to save up for those expensive college years, or the even more expensive, post-college years. It's all worth it.
While our feet ache and our heads hurt, it's important to recognize and always remember that there is a reason we put up with this everyday. We all have that in common. Keep going. You can do it.
