On Tuesday, January 30, President Trump delivered his first State of the Union address, which was not only cringe-worthy but way too long.
What was meant to be a call for unity turned out to be another opportunity for him to fear monger and pander to his base. He placated to his supporters' fears and racism by painting immigrants as criminals, only mentioning gang members of MS-13 and inviting the grieving families of two girls murdered by an immigrant to further promote his agenda.
He could have also taken the time to speak out against the hatred and violence we've seen from white supremacists over the past year, but instead, he chose to say, "Americans are dreamers too," a tone-deaf phrase which is now being called the new "All Lives Matter."
Of course, DACA recipients, also known as Dreamers, are young men and women brought to this country by their parents as undocumented immigrants, who have been given temporary legal status to live, work, grow, and love as Americans.
Trump's comments strike as insensitive and unnecessary, especially as the fate of these DACA recipients is now tied to the creation of a border wall.
Trump also talked about the perils of chain migration, but of course, he did not exactly have all the facts on his side. The President claimed, "a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives," which is decidedly incorrect.
An immigrant cannot petition for an aunt or cousin to move to the U.S. In fact, petitioning for a brother or sister takes at least 13 years. An immigrant can only bring their spouse and any children under 21. That's it. So this notion that immigrants are entering the country in droves is simply untrue.
Thus, a night that should have comforted and united the nation, further deepened our divides.
