Dear College Students, It's Time To Start Genuinely Caring About Your Future

An open letter to anyone who is living in the moment a little too much.

Future

Dear You,

Sometimes it is easy to just get caught up in the here and now. People tend to live in the moment and not think too deeply about the future.

I am here to tell you to start caring at least in some ways.

One of the biggest regrets people have in life is that they did not do enough while they were living. People often find that they wasted their lives in some way by not living to their full potential. You can do something to change that perspective for yourself. If you do not want to look back at your life and regret it, then do something about it!

If you want to change the world, start small now. It could be something as simple as using reusable straws instead of plastic to save the oceans from pollution. The difference will never be made unless you start small now. You have so much potential bottled up inside of you just waiting to be used.

If you want to have a stable career where you are happy and satisfied, make sure you are on track now to achieve that level. Go to college to get whatever degree you need to get the job you want. That also means if you are in college now, make sure you can graduate in a timely manner.

This brings me to the idea of money. I wish I could tell you that money is not important, but society says otherwise. Money is necessary to provide resources for you to live comfortably and for a long time. If you know you need money, then you should start finding ways to make that money. If that means you have to get a job, then at least you will have something to help you get you to where you need to go in life.

Another problem a lot of people face today revolves around social media. College students especially tend to put pictures and words out there that they later regret in life. We hear about it all the time from companies rejecting students based off of something they posted online that was not appropriate. Start caring about your future by being aware of everything you are presenting on social media. As the old saying goes, you should not post anything your grandma would not want to see.

Yes, I understand that the future may be scary to you. The unknown often has that effect on people, but you cannot let it get the best of you. You have more control over your future than you think.

My advice to you is to take a deep breath and take a step back. Focus on what is important to you now, and then think about what will still be important to you down the road. You know you better than anyone else, and you know what life should look like in the future.

Go out there and make a difference. Do something now to avoid regrets later. Good luck in the future!

Sincerely,

A Concerned Life Coach

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
