By now, you surely must of heard of the latest trend in the Starbucks coffee community, the Unicorn Frappuccino. It's a brightly colored purple drink that changes to pink when you stir it, and is decorated with pink and purple sprinkles and a blue sour syrup throughout. Starbucks came out with the drink on April 19th, and will only have it until the 23rd of April.
At first I really was not sure if I wanted to try it, after hearing several reviews that it was really sour, which I am not a huge fan of sour things. But I guess I got pulled into the hype of it all, and visited Starbucks on campus to give this new drink a try. I went later in the evening, and only waited in line for a few minutes, but every single person in front of me ordered the Unicorn Frappuccino. A few the employees said they had been only working two hours and made 60 of them.
It was an odd experience actually ordering a Unicorn Frappuccino, because I never actually thought I would be putting those two words together for a Starbucks order. I watched the girl make the drink, and it was a pretty interesting process. She opened a lot of packets of powder which made me very skeptical as to what was actually in the drink. Finally she topped the drink with whipped cream and sprinkles, and I was impressed with the presentation of it.
The Unicorn Frappuccino is pretty, I will give it that. The way the barista made a design with the blue syrup was neat, and the colors were bright and fun. But as for the taste, I was very on the fence about. When you take the first sip, you get hit with a ridiculous amount of sugary beverage, but as you stir it, it becomes instantly sour. I enjoyed the mango flavor it promised, but I was not a fan of the blue syrup which was the source of the sour flavor.
As I kept drinking it, I found myself getting used to the flavor, but also sick of it. The drink is overly sweet, and I think Starbucks tried to balance that out with the sour, but for me it was just a bad combination. The frappuccino was not terrible, but it is something I would definitely only get once.
I then investigated what actually is in the Unicorn Frappuccino by going on the Starbucks website, and it definitely made me regret what I put in my body. I ordered a grande frappuccino, and just in that portion was 59 grams of sugar, 16 grams of fat and 230 grams of sodium. Not to mention whatever was in those sketchy packets.
Overall, I'd give the Unicorn Frappuccino 2 out of 5 stars. It was not the best frappuccino in the world, and the two stars are mostly for the presentation of it. I liked the mango flavor, and if Starbucks just made a mango frappuccino, I would definitely try it. But sadly, the only thing magical about this drink was its colors.
