A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."Star Wars: The Force Awakens" was released. I needed a new trilogy or saga for my December entertainment excitement, and now we all have the new installments of Star Wars. I avoided all spoilers, and only watched very few trailers. I did not know what to expect, but this movie was everything my hopes and dreams were made of for the saga. I feel the need to express the film's greatness, so in warning, this article contains spoilers if you have not yet experienced this present to the world.
So before the film even begins, they give you the trailers of nerd's dreams. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2" like a similar to the first one, but I got excited regardless because it's TMNT. Then you get to watch the "Captain America: Civil War" trailer on the big screen -- I had chills. This trailer was not as fantastic as I wanted it to be because they released the trailer super early, but still, it is Marvel. The marvelous movie trailers continues with the "X-Men: Apocalypse" trailer. The last X-Men film was great, and this one looks very promising.
Then, this happens:
I already had chills, and if you are a super-fan like me, you were waiting for the iconic music to play and the opening crawl to begin.
That first note is played and this fills the screen:
Cue the small tear running down my cheek. From this point forward, I shivered and shook with excitement throughout the entire film. This was what I had been waiting for.
This will probably be the only negative thing I say about the film (though it's not that bad), but the opening scene did not live up to the prior films. My favorite opening scene is from "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi" with the epic saving of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. Do not get me wrong, Kylo Ren's force hold was epic.
But, I've seen that before.
Oh, look! There it is! Disney is just loosely basing epic powers from other Disney-owned universes. The opening scene was still super great and you see how strong the force is with Kylo Ren, but it is not Luke fighting a rancor.
I've read that some people think that the characters lacked depth. I'm sorry to those of you that thought so, but I strongly disagree. Kylo Ren, the main villain, is having a total struggle with the force. He understands the power that he wields, but the light is trying to find its way back to him. Kylo alone has the depth that Vader had in the originals, with the struggle of light from dark. Kylo is the son of Han Solo and Princess Leia, and also the grandson of Darth Vader. How can that lack any depth at all?
Then we have Fin, a storm trooper who felt the force and decided to do the right thing. Plus, he has a super mysterious past because he was taken from his family. Now, I'm no expert on this, but I'm just going to throw out a relation to Lando Calrissian, but that's my theory. Fin also adds a great deal of humor to the film, and I absolutely loved his character. He was well written and his casting was fantastic.
Along with mysterious pasts, we are introduced to Rey. Rey gives off a very strong Luke-vibe from the very beginning, and then the light of the force calls out to her, sending her on a journey to find Luke Skywalker. Epic, right? People have questioned how she "mastered" the force so quickly, when it took Anakin a great deal of training. First off, she did not "master" the force; she simply used it. Secondly, Anakin was the chosen one of his time. Who is to say that the force does not become stronger throughout his lineage?
Thirdly, Anakin was never put in that great of a life-threatening situation before he "mastered" the force. Anakin always had something to protect himself with, like the star ship in "Episode I." He never really faced a Sith before he had training. Rey's life depended on using the force, so naturally the force came out super powerful, an awakening. Plus, how strong she truly is with the force makes me suspect her of being from a strong family. We never get her last name, so I'm just going to say Rey Skywalker sounds pretty great to me.
With the additional characters of Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker, I just do not see how a true Star Wars fan could not like this film. The visuals were so crisp and vivid. I mean this is not director J.J. Abrams's first run with reprising epic space films (see the new Star Trek adaptations). The story line was great, the humor was correctly written for all characters and the end makes you want "Episode VIII" to come out tomorrow. "The Force Awakens" was everything I needed it to be and more. If you have not seen it yet, I recommend you do so relatively soon.
May the force be with you.
