I have been working in retail for three years now and while I love my job (usually) there are some days that make me question why anyone would chose to do this with their life. And i'm sure i'm not the only one that feels that way. So for those of you who work in retail, or those who don't understand what it's really like, here's a glimpse of what goes down during a retail shift.
Trying to function in the morning so you can open the store on time.
Seeing you're scheduled with your favorite coworker so you can suffer together.`
Getting ignored by a customer when you try to greet them.
Having to explain the sales over and over again.
You start thinking about all the other things you could be doing.
Then the register breaks again and you can't remember basic math.
You get stuck with a talkative customer while you're supposed to be on a lunch break.
You become a master of the fake smile.
Then another customer yells at you and you excuse yourself to the back.
But you have to put on a brave face and pretend nothing can hurt you.
Your coworker comes in for their shift and asks if you're OK.
You finally snap after hearing the same 40 songs all day long.
Then there's that one customer that walks in right before closing.
Your boss asks you to do something after you've already clocked out.
And finally after what feels like a lifetime, you are free.
(until tomorrow when you have to do it all over again).
