SpringFest Fort Worth

This past summer, Bryce Liston approached me about being involved with an awesome new idea: SpringFest. Only back then it didn't have a name, or a plan, or really anything other than the idea of a music festival for TCU students benefiting something greater than us. That cause was Cook Children's.

SpringFest is a music festival going down on April 16 from 6 to 10 p.m. and benefiting Cook Children's Hospital. Yup, all proceeds are going directly to funding a summer camp for the patients of the hospital to give them a fun opportunity to escape the hospital room and really have a great time. We have been working with the hospital the past several months and after touring the hospital and meeting some of the staff a few months back, the whole reality that we were creating an entire music festival set in. I was amped.

After months of preparation, we scored a dope lineup, great setup of food trucks, and an incredible group of sponsors including local vendors, restaurants and on-campus organizations. Look, I get it, with this deal being on TCU campus, a handful of people are assuming it's just gonna be like every other TCU-sponsored event. That couldn't be further from what we've got lined up here. This is an independent event that just happens to be on TCU's campus. SpringFest is like any other music festival that you guys have been to. Imagine ACL or Coachella, just on a smaller, more personalized scale. The whole event is gonna be surrounded by fencing as any other festival is. The stage? Wow. It's huge, plus we scored some large LCD screens that'll be going throughout the time of the festival. It's gonna be a sweet setup. Rain? Yeah, it's rain or shine. In case of rain, we lined up a huge tent to cover most of the crowd. Plus, have you ever been to a festival in the rain? It's actually amazing. Especially with the crazy artists we scored .

Lemme first start with the food. It's gonna be dank. We've got about six food trucks lined up to start serving y'all at 5 p.m. (when the gates open), an hour before the concerts even start. Then we've got other stands like Monster servin' up energy drinks and Landmark with water and mocktails. Along with that, Landmark is hosting the first ever SpringFest kick-off party on Thursday night. Ten percent of the proceeds of every item sold that night go to Cook Children's on top of hosting an amazing silent auction with a bunch of free giveaways. Be there -- if you are of the legal age, of course. Then, immediately following the actual festival, they are hosting the after-party during which anyone with a SpringFest wristband will be able to skip the entire line to get in. Pretty sweet deal.

That leads me to the lineup. We've got a little bit of everything for everyone. And I'm still in awe we scored these artists honestly. Kickin' off the festival is Flatland Cavalry. If you haven't checked these dudes out then you're seriously missing out. They're the next big country act of Texas. You heard it here first. With a solid blend of Texas country (yes it's different than any other type of country -- and a heck of a lot better) and folk/Americana, their jaw-dropping songwriting ability will leave you breathless.

Second up are The Knocks. They deliver beat-driven alternative and remix styled tunes featuring huge artists such as Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding and Carly Rae Jepson. Each of their songs has a unique character and get the crowd hyped. Their shows are crazy. Plus, they just dropped their new album and were featured in several big name music scene articles, including Time magazine. But you know, super casual.

Headlining the whole deal is Walshy Fire of Major Lazer. Ever seen Major Lazer live? It's insane. They put on a heck of a show and Washy Fire is gonna be super rad. If for whatever reason you live under a rock and don't know who this is, he's a dope EDM/house artist with huge tunes out on the radio now like "Lean On" (feat. MØ) and "Light It Up" (feat. Nyla and Fuse). It's gonna be crazy. Word on the street is there are gonna be air cannons, crazy light shows and everything in between.

Tickets are on sale now along with T-shirts. They're only $22 a pop for tickets and the T-shirts are comfort colors, and what college kid can resist a good comfort color shirt with a frocket? Check it the design:

Don't be the one who misses out on the next big thing to hit TCU.

SpringFest is gonna be a crazy good time; seriously snag a ticket now or you'll regret it. It's all for the children, plus you get to have a great time while giving back.

Come out and eat some dank food, listen to some rad tunes, with nothin' but good vibes.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
