Everyone has the same feelings during their spring semester. The lack of motivation, the amount of coffee bought, and the tears shed while studying are common for every college student. Having a smooth sailing spring semester is a myth. Students are barely surviving through this time and have too much on their plates. This is a case of the spring semester blues.
Spring semester starts and you're excited to be back at it with your friends.
It's been awhile since you've all seen each other. Winter break was long! As much as you loved not having classes, you've missed going out, the gossip, and seeing their face everyday.
You tell yourself that this is going to be the best semester.
Spring semester means a fresh start. It's a new time to make goals and succeed in your classes. You know you'll be motivated and can balance your school work with other jobs and clubs.
After the first week of classes, you feel great.
Your teachers seem awesome, you see your friends all the time, and the workload is light. Why were you worrying about spring semester anyway? This semester will be a piece of cake.
You quickly start to second guess yourself.
After a couple of weeks, you realize that you were wrong about your classes. It seems impossible to juggle the slowly increasing workload, your other activities, and your social life. No one has time for any of that, let alone all of that.
Crying happens more often now.
"Did you hear how impossible the test was?" Immediate crying. "Our projects due tomorrow and we didn't even start yet." Tears stream down your face. "Wow, you have three tests next week?" Ugly sobbing starts.
"Motivation" is not in your vocabulary.
At this point, you have become so lazy. There's only a few weeks left and summer is calling your name. Sure, you have piles of study guides to go through and projects that need to be finished. But, those last few assignments and tests seem irrelevant when you can sleep and start a new season of Friends on Netflix.
You have come to accept failure.
What's the point of trying if you know you're going to fail? Spring semester is way worse than you remembered.
Finals roll around and you just hope for the best.
At this point, you're hoping for a miracle. But, you're friends and teachers are rooting for you. The words of encouragement lift your spirits. You say a few quick prayers, wear your lucky underwear, and head into the exam.
You head out of your last final with a feeling of relief.
At this rate, you don't care if you aced the exam. "As long as I passed" is what you've been saying to yourself all along. You know you tried your best. After a long spring semester, you're just happy to be alive.
