What It's Like To Be Spring Broke

Some of us have a job.

What It's Like To Be Spring Broke
Kase D.

Spring Break is one of those beautiful times when we are released from our prison cells (college) and allowed to venture out for a time before we must return to the cold arms of econ and statistics classes. Yet for some of us we have a job, we are struggling college students and I don’t mean struggling to pay for your Starbucks every morning. I’m talking about struggling to put gas in your vehicle to even get to work. Struggling to pay your cell phone bill while also having a mild social life where you eat out once and pray your card doesn’t get denied. If any of these sound familiar to you, you are probably spring broke.

Are all of your friends and college peers going to white sandy beaches, breathtaking mountains or getting to travel in a foreign country, while you sit alone making minimum wage? If so you are spring broke, welcome to club boring. Don’t get me wrong the peace and quiet is kind of nice, the buzz of college is fading and everything is slower. It’s weird how empty the streets between the classroom buildings are. It’s nice to get my favorite seat at the coffee shop, until I scroll through Instagram and see everyone else’s stunning views or group photos on the beach.

Now it’s not all that bad you are making money and not having to worry about classes, projects, meetings or events. There are some perks to being spring broke though. You can enjoy your workout and not have to worry about fighting for the weights you need. You can binge watch multiple shows on Netflix or catch up on series you’ve previously started. Call home, see how your family is and make the conversation count. Jam out to your favorite song and sing to it while you do laundry that you’ve put off for the past couple weeks. Wash your sheets. Being that you are broke take some time to look for random scholarships to apply for or some that you’ve been putting off. This is a great chance to take your time and fill them out and write good essays to hopefully give you an edge. Vacuum your living space I guarantee you don’t even know the last time that happened.

Although it sucks you’re stuck in college adulting while most of your friends are out gallivanting across the country you can still make the best of the situation. Be productive and get ahead for when the semester starts back. And heck maybe next spring break you can save enough money to go somewhere cool and take off work plenty of time ahead. Knowing you probably not, but hey you can hope right. Anyways, have a happy and fun Spring Broke!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
