For many of us, spring break is a well needed escape from the stresses of school. After doing countless papers, projects and exams, it’s a time to relax and unwind, re-energizing yourself for the remainder of the semester. In order to do this, many have already booked their vacation getaways to faraway lands and luxurious hotels, and then there are those of us who will be spending spring break back at home. Sure, it’s great to see family members and reconnect with others from your home town, but after all of that is said and done, it can become pretty boring. Here are some things that you can do to occupy your time and create a memorable break while at home.
1. Check out what’s new.
Those old spots that you remember visiting as a kid may no longer be there. Walk around town and see if anything has changed since you’ve been gone. Maybe a few new dining spots have opened or there’s a fun new spot that’s all the rave for people your age. Get out, explore and see what the locals are talking about.
2. Reach out to an old friend.
Going off to college can often cause a rift in friendships with those back home. Call to make plans with them and catch up on what’s been going on. I’m sure you will all have much to share.
3. Go on an eating spree.
Not so fast -- I don’t mean going off and stuffing your face with McDonald's big macs or Domino’s Pizza, but with items that you may not normally obtain when at school. Maybe there’s a small diner up the street that makes the best clam chowder, or a somewhat hidden establishment that you’ve never noticed before. Become a food critic and eat at places you haven’t eaten at before.
4. Restart a failed resolution.
Did that New Year’s resolution not work out so well? This is the perfect time to give it another shot. Prepare yourself to get closer to achieving that goal of yours.
5. Pamper yourself.
Hey, you deserve it. Go and get that Swedish massage, or drink a few cold and refreshing beers while you simply kick back and relax.
6. Try something you’ve been wanting to do.
Still eyeing those flyers posted at the coffee shop about dance lessons? If it’s something you’re interested in doing, this is the perfect time to do it. Don’t put it off for another time -- this is an opportunity to create an unforgettable experience.
7. Begin looking for potential summer jobs/opportunities.
Ask around and see if any businesses or neighbors will be in need of help for those summer months. Fix up that resume and make it look snazzy so that you can get the chance to save up the funds for some summer fun, or an exotic trip for next spring break.
8. Revisit an old hobby.
Doing all of that homework and working or volunteering on the side probably left you with little to no time to do what you love. Take a trip down memory lane and revisit an activity that you once loved to do.
9. Catch up on missed shows/movies.
It’s OK to remain in the comfort of your own home and binge watch a few TV series. We’ve all done it, some more so than others, but it’s understandable. Netflix to the rescue!
10. Shop for new and trendy clothes.
Depending on how the weather is, it could be time to start packing away those old winter clothes. Treat yourself to some stylish new gear just in time for spring. Put up that winter jacket and whip out those vibrant sweaters.
11. Enjoy the fact that it’s spring.
Bye bye snow (I hope)! Gone are those days of dreading having to venture outdoors because of the brutal temperatures and slippery walkways. Listen to the birds chirp as you swat away those pesky bugs from your food. Ah, welcome back spring!
