Loading up the car and enduring the 18-plus hour drive that slowly, mile by mile, takes me away from my new favorite place in the whole world is nothing short of depressing. Sitting in the back of this cramped car that is a million and a half degrees, I have come to this conclusion. Every year, I -- along seemingly every other college kid in the world -- takes the long awaited and highly anticipated adventure of my life that our generation terms “spring break."
This week consists of late nights and early mornings, cheap food, never enough water and always enough alcohol, sandy toes and salty kisses (or something along those lines), lots of pictures, new friends and flings and way too many memories that you will either laugh, cry, or laugh until you cry at, or in the best of worst situations, not even remember in the slightest sense, but still treasure for the rest of your college career.
Okay, you are probably looking at this list saying yes, yes, and yes! Spring break mems 4ever love life, how could you possibly be sad? This is the problem. We go on spring break, have this amazing time, and then fall into this despondent little rut when forced to go home because why would we ever want to face that scary thing called life and, more specifically, reality.
Here is to my people who are currently stuck in the spring break blues mood, forever wishing their life could be clicked onto spring break mode forever.
Your tan will fade, the sand will wash away from every crevice of your bronzed body, but I promise you sunshine is in your near future.
Personally I always question why, out of all the places I could have chosen to begin my adult life, I chose a place that reaches temperatures below zero for the majority of the school year. That being said, it is most likely because of all those factors you look at when choosing your utmost perfect college but, needless to say, when I am bundled up in 10-plus layers and still chilled to my bone, I sometimes feel like my life is in complete shambles.
Winter, more specifically the cold, brings about this feeling that is a mystery to scientists but, in my eyes, so real. This phenomenon is called seasonal depression, and if you experience it you know what I am talking about. You constantly are dreaming of faraway destinations filled with sun, sand, mimosas and happiness, and looking at the weather forecast makes you want to bawl your eyes out until summer. I feel like this is part of the reason spring break makes everyone so happy; it is a break from the cold, nothingness of the Midwest.
So for all my seasonal depressed readers, I know spring break was a breath of fresh air. Although home is not quite up to par in terms of temperature, sunshine and blue skies are in the forecast because summer is slowly, but surely peeking over our shoulders.
Breaks are fun and relaxing, but as intimidating as reality might be, you need to face it.
Another reason why vacations make you crave constant adventure is because of their carefree nature. Nobody packs their worries, cares, concerns, or fears with them on spring break. All those negativities are left at home and upon our return, absolutely nobody wants to face them. Although life is so frustrating and stressful at times, there are little increments of happiness every so often that make all other burdens disappear. These are the moments you need to grasp onto, and never let go.
There is a quote out there that I absolutely love, and it talks about how happiness will elude you if you are constantly chasing it, but if you just give yourself time to live and cherish wholeheartedly the life you have been given, happiness has a way of finding you. It is so accurate it is scary.
As hard as it is to come back to begin with, coming back to the college atmosphere makes everything a little better.
Spring break is such a carefree time filled with memories that will never be replaced or forgotten. Whether it is a booze cruise turned dolphin excursion, or a call for a taxicab that ends up being a party bus (neon lights and stripper pole included), what we did on break will forever be the things we talk about when we reminisce about these four years.
Coming back after those crazy adventures is depressing, to say the least. I know everyone is feeling it, but when you know you are coming back to an atmosphere that is your ideal surrounding, it kind of makes the woes we hold disappear.
It is so crazy to me that you can move away from everything you have ever known and just start a whole new beginning. Yet even after a few short months, you can confidently call the place and the people who surround you home. That is what college is all about, and I will never feel more at ease than I do here.
College is four years, but I can assure you it feels like four minutes simply because it goes by so fast. While spring break is now only remembered through pictures and the occasional video, know that one rolls around every year, and the temporary rut you are currently in will soon be only a distant memory.
