Summer is right around the corner; in fact, it has already started for many college students. And, while there is a variety of great ways to spend your summer, be it interning, traveling, or just relaxing on the beach, a large population of our young people decides to spend their summers working away at an array of summer camps as counselors, lifeguards, and in many other roles.
There is something magical about the effect that a summer camp can have on a child. It's a place that a child can come and not be held down by any stigmas they may face at school or at home. In fact, for many, summer camp can be considered a home; particularly for children who may not come from unstable ones. As a counselor or staff member of a summer camp, I think it is important to remember that camp should be a place of acceptance; a place where a child does not have to feel different and they can be themselves and have true summer camp experience. In addition, as a staff member, you are in the position to be a part of that magic. You are a major part of many of the moments a child will have at camp; so make them good ones. Remember that summer camp is often a vacation for campers; a place to make friends. It's a place where they can face their fears and become inspired.
One of the best parts about the camp, in my opinion, is that it doesn't necessarily only have an effect on the campers. I think a lot of young adults who went to a particular camp, or even had a sibling attend, see working at that camp as a way to give back a little of the magic we experienced when we were younger. And for all of the magical lollipop moments we provide to our campers, they do so for us as well. There is something extremely profound about being a 20-something and learning something new from an eight-year-old. I am constantly reminded by my campers not to take life too seriously, a lesson that I think we all forget at some point.
It's good to reflect and realize that when we bring forth our best selves, we can bring that out in others as well. Camp is a place where you can truly be yourself, and you should be.
I understand that summer camp may not be a place for everyone; but if you are one of the lucky few that get to spend your summer at one, remember that you were chosen for this position. And even if you're earning peanuts, you are getting paid to play; so play! It's not always easy, but you get out of your experience exactly what you put into it. Pour your heart into you work, and you will leave with it filled. Take a break when you need to, and enjoy your summer.
