Picture this: You are on your way home from a long day of work or hanging out with some friends and all you want to do is go home and get in your bed, maybe watch some Netflix. Then all of a sudden, bam! You run into the car in front of you; why did you run into them? Well, just like you they wanted to go home, but in order to do so they have to turn. The reason you ran into them is because they neglected to use their turn signals. You were busy jamming out to your favorite song on the radio and didn't know they decided to turn. You have to call the cops, and report the accident to your insurance companies, and wasted about an hour dealing with some person who did not use their turn signals. Turn signals are so important for many different reasons. They keep everyone safe for starters, when using a turn signal you are showing other drivers you are about to slow down to almost a stop and turn off to another road.
While learning to drive you have to learn some of the laws required for all drivers to use; there are no exceptions to anyone (even the president uses turn signals). According to Kentucky State Law there are about six different rules on how and when to use your turn signals, and here are some of them.
1. A person shall not turn a vehicle or move right or left upon a roadway until the movement can be made with reasonable safety nor without giving an appropriate signal in the manner hereinafter. (Basically, use them before you turn.)
2. A signal indicating the intention to turn right or left shall be given continuously for not less than the last 100 feet traveled by the motor vehicle before the turn. (Don't just turn your turn signal on as you start to turn; give the other drivers a good heads up.)
3. All signals required for a motor vehicle shall be given by signal lamps or mechanical signal devices. (If you claim that your turn signal is broken, you simply roll a window down and wave what direction you are going.)
4. A signal required for a vehicle that is not a motor vehicle may be given by either hand signals, signal lamps, or mechanical signal devices; the signal shall be given intermittently for the last 50 feet traveled by the vehicle before the turn.
So now you know what the law says about turn signals, so please be a good person and use your turn signals! Stop being lazy or forgetful because it is not hard to pull a handle up or down that is already right beside your hand!
