There are millions of misconceptions about being a southern girl. It isn’t just camouflage, guns, and redneck decisions you see on YouTube. We don’t all drive jacked up trucks and have missing teeth either. Some stereotypes of the South are nothing short of being unfair. Growing up southern has been a blessing in my opinion. I'd like to think that it has made me a more well-rounded individual.
Being a southern girl is knowing how to talk to parents and being someone they want to bring home to momma. We can really hit it off over a home cooked meal on a Sunday night with your family. We wouldn't even hesitate to lend a helping hand to set the table or help finish preparing a meal.
It's always having good manners and never failing to say yes ma’am. We will fight you on it if you tell us calling you ma’am makes you feel old and you want us to call you by your first name instead. It’s in our blood to call you ma’am and say yes sir and nothing else is going to come out of our mouths. Sorry, Linda, I'm going to call you ma'am out of habit.
Being a southern girl makes you well rounded. Like yeah, we can put ourselves together and look like a Barbie but we also know how to get our hands dirty. Not much can gross us southern girls out, except maybe spiders cause those are eight-legged demons. There is nothing wrong with being able to do both. You can look pretty while helping your dad mulch the yard.
Have you ever met a shy southern belle? Yeah, probably not. We know how to hold our own in a conversation. Honestly, we could probably talk to a dog just as long as a person. And with our sweet southern accents, we can just about draw anyone in for a nice talkin’ to. Even if we are completely uninterested in what you have to say we will have a grin a mile wide on our faces.
Sometimes southern girls can have a bit of a temper, but that’s all a part of the charm, right? We wouldn’t be any fun without a wild side and you probably would think we were boring without it. We can hold our own drinking (sometimes) and can look good while doing it. Now I'm not saying we are alcoholics by any means, we know our limits, but could definitely do some damage. Needless to say, our drink of choice is usually named Jack or Jim.
So here's to growing up with southern charm, being raised to say yes ma'am and not being afraid to get dirt under our nails.
