Why I Am A Southern, Christian Democrat

I'm a walking paradox.

Why I Am A Southern, Christian Democrat
Gardner Dorton

I've grown up in really conservative, Christian environments my entire life. I therefore grew up with the assumption that Christianity and conservativism are one and the same thing. I thought that if I wanted to be a Christian, I had to be a conservative. Then, one day, I wasn't any longer.

I became a southern, Christian Democrat (gasp!).

What a paradox of titles, isn't it?

Southern. Christian. Democrat? What?

I can't say exactly what it was that made me make the conversion to the good ol' donkey party, but it happened. I started thinking differently about things and came to my own conclusions instead of the ones handed to me. I'm not saying that the conclusions handed to me are wrong, but they're just not for me anymore.

Now, since there's already a Christian undertone to this article, I'll bet you're expecting me to make a biblical case for what I believe in. You probably expect me to justify why the democratic party is the Christian party. I'm not going to. I'm going to tell you that there is no Christian political party.

You see, at first I was in distress when I found myself playing left field. I thought, "This is everything I've been taught, this is wrong." But I was taught wrong. Jesus has no political party. He doesn't favor a candidate because they're conservative or liberal.

This may come as a shock, but let's think about it. This is the same guy who refused to be crowned King of Jerusalem. The same one who, when asked about the rule of Rome in Israel, essentially said, "Don't worry about it."

He's never been one to hang himself up on politics. If he didn't want to be king and have complete control on "policy", then why do we think that he is rooting at the edge of his seat for one of our candidates right now?

I don't think that Jesus belongs to a political party.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
