As a New Jersey native and an attestant of Hurricane Sandy, I can honestly say that Hurricane Joaquin was unlike anything I have ever seen. Of course the levels of destruction down here in good ol' Conway were unfortunately similar to those of Sandy, the spirit of our community at Coastal Carolina deviated from my past experiences. The beloved term, 'It's not college, it's Coastal" rang true once more.
For beginners, the hurricane couldn't stop our homecoming football game on Saturday; it may not have been the best idea to have a wet T-shirt contest – I mean white out, but nonetheless, Alabama A&M's butts were hurting on the way home leaving the score of 55-0.
In addition, we successfully and undoubtedly had the most deserving and spirited student at Coastal Carolina accept the Homecoming King's crown for 2015. Chip Mullen, is a student in the L.I.F.E. Program, he studies mainly in the exercise science field and is one of the happiest people you will see walking around campus!
If you need to get from one section of the campus to the other, you whip out your kayak and go through those woods! However, if you do not own a kayak and you live on campus, luckily you could have rented one out from the Outdoor Center, located inside the HTC Building.
We got our knees deep in the water somewhere, just as Zac Brown wished for himself. Although Zac Brown was talking about being on the beach – Coastal is fifteen minutes from Myrtle Beach and there was mostly definitely some wind blowing through our hair too!
As Charlie Sheen once said, "It ain't a party until something gets broken". Whether it was a bathing suit bottom, a few laws or conduct related instances, or simply one's dignity, there was most definitely some slipping and sliding into a few muddy situations.
Our Bae Watch remained as strong as our prayers for no classes on Monday (which were thankfully answered).
Being in the state of South Carolina, it's almost impossible to not have a little bit of fun in the water and mud with your above average-sized vehicle.
Another thing that is a common recreational activity south of the Mason Dixon Line is fishing. Although our cars and trucks may be stuck, or our roads be blocked in from the high water; it naturally means that with the water, the fish should tag along.
Of course, with any exciting spectacle at college, there will always be girls to document their experiences. To be completely honest, I was pretty proud while attempting to be the classic, 'in the moment girl' with my roommates.
Hopefully our innovations with getting around, not only on-campus, but off-campus as well, will be giving us more parking spaces as commuters and staff; granted people stack their kayaks, flippers, surfboards, and paddleboards.
If I had a choice, there is no other school I would rather attend during the 1,000-year rainfall.
Although Hurricane Joaquin has become a record-setting storm of destruction for South Carolina, we are standing strong and tall. Which is exactly what was the case with Hurricane Sandy. We came together as a united front and became Jersey Strong. After being first-handedly affected by Hurricane Joaquin recently, I can already tell that we, as residents of the Palmetto state of South Carolina, will not only overcome the tragedies and rebuilding, but come out South Carolina Strong.
