Have you ever wondered how random people get your phone number? Those times when someone dials wrong and calls you saying, "George honey! I told you four times already to get milk from the store now get to it!" then hanging up the phone before you can explain to them that you are, in fact, not George. Maybe you have experienced those text conversations where someone has said something, but it was simply too good to reveal your true self, so you had to go along with the conversation.
Hey babe just wanted to let you know that you looked amazing today, sorry I couldn't tell you earlier.
Oh, it's no big deal, you looked pretty hot yourself.
Really?
Totally
Hey would you maybe wanna go out sometime?
I've been dying for you to ask me!
Okay can I pick you up in an hour?
I'll see you then, gotta go get ready *Insert kissy face emoji here*
(Now, I admit, doing that to someone is not very nice. I will let you know I completely made that conversation up. It is, however, an example of something that could happen in those types of conversations.)
There has been plenty of times where friends of mine have received a text with unwanted pictures because the sender thought they were someone else. I have had someone text me thinking I was whoever gave them the number. Those poor souls got a fake, and it just happened to be my number. Usually in that case I will tell them, but sometimes (and boys especially) those people will say the silliest things, and it is so hard to resist going along with the conversation. I have been on the opposite side, though. Giving someone a fake number is always an exhilarating feeling, because you want to know their reaction when they find out it's not your number they're contacting. Most of the time giving a fake number is not to be mean, but simply to get rid of an unwanted person that keeps pressing for your information.

Time and time again there have been different stories of people getting the wrong number by mistake or by rejection. There have been stories on the internet that I have found of people getting into conversations, and most definitely some embarrassing situations, with a total stranger because of a mix-up with a phone number. Practically all of them are quite hilarious. You never know what might happen when a stranger texts/calls you out of the blue thinking you are someone else.
Here are some examples:
