6 Sorority Stereotypes That Aren't True

We are more than just a stereotype

6 Sorority Stereotypes That Aren't True
Kylie Ryckaert

To begin, I would like everyone to know how much we, as sorority women, are underestimated. Any member of Greek life would agree with me. People who are not in Greek life may not feel the same way. The thing is, you don't truly know what Greek life is until you become a part of it. So do not be so quick to judge us. My sorority is so much more than just the typical stereotype the media portrays us as. We are leaders, dream chasers, successful, involved, philanthropists, respectful, and so much more. We are not just a bunch of stuck up blondes who spend all of our daddies money on alcohol and buying friends. This is offensive to some sorority women, but now I just laugh at it. Here are some of those stereotypes you here on the reg that are completely inaccurate.

1. We pay for our friends.

I'm sorry, but you should never tell a sorority woman where you think her money is going. In fact, most of us have parents who are struggling to put us through college, and we pay for everything on our own. Just to inform you where our money goes, it goes to our philanthropy, is donated to other sororities, fraternities and organizations, and to the house where we have our sisterhoods and meetings. We pay for that, not to have friends. So think again before making that comment, because my money is going to something so much more than your typical stereotype.

2. We are dumb.

This makes me laugh, because you have to maintain a high GPA to even be a part of a sorority. We all have a number of study hours/tables we have to complete, too. I think these two points throw that stereotype right out the window, so I will just leave that there.

3. We haze.

One of the main reasons to join a sorority is to be with people who are just like you and to build a sisterhood with them. Do you haze you best friend that you have had since you were young, just so you can have her prove she is still your friend? No. And if you do, that's a very odd friendship. We love our sisters. We want to better each other. Hurting each other just to have them prove they want to be in the sorority isn't sisterhood.

4. We only care about looks.

I love to wear my hair in a bun right on top of my head, groutfits, long fuzzy socks and no makeup. Sometimes I'll even whip out a shirt that has a giant puppy on it with my Kardashian braids. Does this sound like I care what I look like? I don't think so. In fact, I didn't even know what contouring was until a few months ago. I always thought that a contour was just a ripple in a stream or lake. Some girls in a sorority may care what they look like and may have a talent for luscious hair and gorgeous makeup, but not all of us. (Currently typing this in my sailboat PJ pants).

5. We drink a lot.

I mean we are in college, almost everyone here drinks. College is the four years of your life to let loose and get the craziness out of your system before going into the real world (and study of course). So for people to say we are the only ones who drink is a tad hypocritical. Some girls in sororities haven't even consumed alcohol a day in their lives, or they barely drink. They are too busy studying, working, or putting their time to another dedication. So cheers to that.

6. We only hang out with other people in Greek life.

Yes, we may hang out with them a lot because they are Greek as well and we share that connection, but not all of us. I have a lot of friends who are not Greek that I see all the time. Some sorority women date/hang out with athletes, people in other organizations, or people not in organizations. It all depends on the person. Just because you aren't Greek doesn't mean we are going to go all Gretchen Wieners on you and yell, "You can't sit with us." We love the company of other organizations, too.

We are so much more than we are seen out to be. This article may not change your mind, but that's your choice. I know for a fact that sorority women are fantastic women who have a lot to prove. I know this, Greek life knows this, and we don't need to prove it to you. So recruit that.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
