Being a part of a sorority comes with a lot of stereotypes and people judging you based off of things they think they know but in reality is very wrong. Each person involved in Greek life is very different from the next so you could never accurately describe them using any of these stereotypes.
1. You pay for your friends.
Paying to be in a sorority is no different than paying fees to play a sport or paying to go on a group trip. Sorority fees go towards events for the girls to attend and towards multiple philanthropy events the chapter puts on. Also, just because one pays these fees does not guarantee that you will get along with every girl in the chapter.
2. All sorority girls are dumb.
This is the worst stereotype due to the fact that each sorority has grade standards that each girl must meet. If a girl was to not meet these standards they are placed on academic probation that requires them to have more mandatory study hours and she is not allowed to attend sorority sponsored events as motive to get her grades back up. Also, other girls in the sorority often offer to help the girl who is struggling with the classes she is struggling with.
3. Hazing.
Hazing is 100% not accepted. Everyone has heard the horror story of a girl being forced to sit on a washing machine and other girls circling every part of her body that jiggled as a part of a hazing ritual. Although I cannot speak for every sorority on every college campus, I have never been a part of or heard of an actual hazing incident on my college campus. Also, every sorority has strict no hazing policies and if a chapter were to go against this policy there would be strict and harsh punishment from that sororities headquarters.
4. We are all party girls.
There is a wide variety of girls in each sorority so it is completely unfair to assume that every girl that is a part of a sorority is a party girl. Although there are a few girls who could be described as party girls in each sorority there is also girls who choose to avoid partying all together. In almost every movie that pictures sorority girls they are always shown as being super crazy, fun partiers who drink a lot and then proceed to do crazy things which is a completely false representation of sorority girls as a whole.
5. We only do philanthropy work because we are required too.
Each sorority has a philanthropy group that they support and volunteer for. When going through recruitment each sorority goes over their philanthropy and what the sorority does for it. This aspect normally has some influence on which sorority you wish to be a part of. This allows for girls to be a part of a philanthropy that they truly care for and hope to help.
Being a part of Greek life is not for everyone and there is nothing wrong with that but, when you talk or are debating being a part of Greek life remember that it is nothing like it is depicted in movies and that the stereotypes cannot describe every person involved in it.
