House Hunters, whether it be the original series hosted by good old Suzanne Whang, House Hunters International, or whatever new series they might have on HGTV, is almost everybody’s guilty pleasure. As all of the UIUC sororities finish up the 2014 recruitment process, it brings to mind the House Hunters experience, Potential New Member style.
House #1
The PNM is looking for a great location for their new sorority. House #1 is a great spot, on campus just a short walk from the quad. Perfect for when she rolls out of bed a little late. Because of the great location, the house is older. It has lots of history but it does have the downsides of an older building, creaky floors, and a lack of AC on certain floors, if not the whole house. The fact remains that the location is its major selling point.
House #2
The next house looks nearly brand new. Recently gutted with newly painted walls, new furniture, and a fresh decor, House #2 looks almost picture perfect. Its location isn't as prime as house #1, but like most of the options, it's not too far away from anything. The shiny new look of the house gives her the opportunity to really start fresh.
House #3
The PNM’s last house is the one with some real personal significance, the house where she’s a legacy. She’s heard her mom, cousin or what-have-you talk about how great the house is, all the fun times she had living there and hanging out. Despite this precedent, the PNM needs to decide if she wants to join the house that she knows from stories, or if she wants to blaze her own trail.
So which house will she choose? The great location, the fresh facelift, or the legacy house?
At the end of the day, the Greek Community knows that it doesn’t just come down to location, a nice decor or a presumed guarantee bid. What makes a sorority house a home are the people a PNM meets there, and the opportunity she sees to grow there, even if somewhat trivial things like location might come to mind.
What this article is really trying to say is hey, rush is over! Time to celebrate with these new members! Because if House Hunters comes back and does that "three months later" chances are everyone is still as happy as they were on Bid Day.
