There was a video uploaded recently that compared sorority life to cult culture. It made references to other sorority's actual promo videos, and made it seem as though women in these organizations are brainwashed.
The video starts with a retro looking screen and creepy staccato bell-like music playing in the background. You see a series of sorority houses chanting and running around.
The voiceover asks the viewer how it would feel to have people who would leave their families for you, give their money to you, give up their bodies to you, and commit to you for life. Meanwhile, as this creepy voice asks these questions, there are shots of countless Bid Day clips, recruitment clips, and promo clips of innocent Greek women explaining how their sorority "without a doubt" was the best decision they ever made thus far.
A few other references were made to the fact that we dance together, have devoted "chants," and "surround each other with enthusiastic members in order to belong." It also says that we hide behind "front groups" like "philanthropy."
That is where I personally drew the line (and that was in the first 45 seconds, LOL).
Our philanthropies are extremely important to us. I cannot speak for every member of any sorority; they definitely have their bad eggs. I am honest when I say as not only a sorority member, but a member of society, that philanthropy is the number one priority. it isn't a facade that keeps us on campus. We don't hide behind it. Honestly, we shove it in everyone's face because we give a crap about something bigger than the rest of us.
On top of that, we have lives outside of the Greek community. People that are in sororities and fraternities would love it if you joined, but don't care if you don't want to. There are so many people in my life that are not only in other organizations, but that aren't even in a frat or srat. My boyfriend, some of my best friends, not to mention my entire bloodline (save for two cousins) has never even set foot near the Greek system.
Sure, we pay a lot of money; we treat our sisterhood as a priority; we give up a lot of time, and we especially spend our free time with each other a lot. That does not, however, mean that we have been brainwashed and tricked into appreciating this system.
I love a good joke, and there were some parts of this video that I thought were pretty dang funny. There was one moment in particular that I chuckled at because it said cult members unite easier when living together. (I plan on living in my sorority house next year.)
Regardless of anyone's ability to take a joke (meaning I'm giving the creator the benefit of the doubt in saying it is a joke), the meaning behind this video cuts pretty deep. Of course, girls who had seen this fired back with scathing rants. My personal favorites were comments by girls saying, "Well someone didn't get a bid, did they?"
I wish i could find a link to leave here, but the video got flagged enough times to be taken down.
