Sophomore Slump: Does It Exist?

Definitely not a freshman anymore.

Sophomore Slump: Does It Exist?

Coming off an incredible freshman year, I expected sophomore year to be just the same, if not better than freshman year. A part of me probably should’ve known that having such a good freshman year would make it hard to have an equally good sophomore year, but many people said that sophomore year was their favorite: your friends are sorted out, you have a general knowledge of the university and your bearings and yet there’s still so much that’s exciting and fresh. If college is the best four years of your life, that means every year is perfect right? Wrong. What was excluded in the conversation was the fact that while you may have more steady friends sophomore year, you lose a lot of friends; this is due to a lack of proximity, classes together or just by having a more mature understanding on who your real friends are. Also, unlike freshman year where everything is new and every experience becomes a memory, you aren’t exposed to as many new experiences and not everything becomes a memory. Keep in mind—these are just my own experiences; there are people who despised freshman year and created more memories sophomore year with the greater stability. It’s different for everyone and those who are adventurers will constantly find themselves in new territories.

Though I questioned whether or not this was a shared sentiment, I soon found out that a lot of sophomores felt the same way. Many of them agreed that this year holds higher standards and greater pressures. Whereas freshman year you could use the excuse “I’m a freshman” for pretty much any mistake, that unfortunately isn’t true for sophomore year; you are expected to know better. You can and should still make mistakes—they are important learning experiences and the best mistakes you can make are the ones you make before entering the “real world” (college years and earlier). Just remember: you are only a freshman once, and there is no shame in doing “freshman-y” things; learn how to use the equipment in the gym, go to the orientation events and

own that lanyard around your neck. #yofo (you’re only a freshman once).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
