Songs To Listen To When You're...

The music we listen to says a lot about us. Music is often a deciding factor for how our day starts, it affects our moods and describes our relationships. Everyone has their own taste; pop, rock, hip-hop, there truly is something for every individual. Personally, my favorite aspect of music is the idea that it can inflict different emotions for every listener. When a song takes over, it doesn't stop at the borders of a country, it hits the airwaves all around the globe. Each person who listens to a song can take a different aspect away. They can make their own memories, take their own lyrics to heart. Music is something that affects us all in different ways. Here are some songs to listen to when you are searching for something to describe the ways we all feel.

1. Feeling Contemplative

A Change of Heart - The 1975

The 1975 seriously have a song for nearly every mood. A song featured on their second studio album, A Change of Heart is an ode to that moment you realize the person you love may not be the person you love. This song has steadily risen up my ’25 Most Played’ playlist on iTunes, and for a good reason. It’s quirky melody, infectious beat, and lyrics that allude to songs on the band’s first album, A Change of Heart is perfect for when those times when you just need to think.

2. Feeling Like Reminiscing

I Wish You Would - Taylor Swift

While it’s no lie that Taylor Swift has a lot of songs dedicated to a lot of guys, this song has always struck a chord with me. Featured in the 7th track position on her fifth album, 1989, the song is often overlooked. Just like A Change of Heart, this is a song I have listened to over and over again. The track is 80’s inspired with synthesizer beats and lyrics that get stuck in your head for hours at a time. Taylor has proven time and time again that she has a talent for making listeners feel the emotion behind her lyrics and this song is no exception.

3. Feeling Like the World is Collapsing

All Will Be Well - The Gabe Dixon Band

This is a song I go back to nearly every day. Since coming to college I’ve noticed it is increasingly easy to feel like you can’t complete everything on time or that there just isn’t enough of you to put 100% into everything you’ve signed up for. Basically, this is my song for when the stress is really getting to me. With lyrics that reassure a worried heart and calming guitar chords, this song is sure to put your mind at ease, at least for a few minutes.

4. Feeling Like You Dodged a Bullet

You're Such A - Hailee Steinfeld

Everyone needs that one song on their playlist that is dedicated to their ex. This song is just for those relationships that ended badly. This is a song that I found accidentally and instantly fell in love with. The lyrics are catchy and the beat is infectious and you are sure to be humming it in your head all day long. It is always best when you realize someone’s true colors before getting too invested, and this song speaks to that fact on many levels.

5. Feeling Like Taking a Drive

Midnight City - M83

This song is not new, I know, but it is a must for those late night drives through the city. The tempo is fast paced and the music almost makes you feel as if you’re flying. I associate this song with most of the late night drives I’ve taken since arriving in college. Something about this song mixed with the lights of the city blurring as you zip by makes a truly memorable experience.

6. Feeling Like Living in the Moment

A.M. - One Direction

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for this band. Despite what most people think of One Direction, they are a band that has consistently put out great music. This song, in particular, is one that sparks a lot of emotion in me each and every time I give it a listen. This is the perfect song to play in those moments where you are just simply aware. When you are aware of every little detail that makes a moment a moment worth remembering. With gentle guitar chords and strong vocals, this song is sure to inspire memories.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
