Funerals are often places of high emotion and sadness for the loss of a loved one, whether it be a relative, close friend, or pet, funerals are not always easy to get through. At funerals, we mourn the loss of the deceased and reminisce on the life they once lived, remember the happy moments, the funny moments, and the difficult moments that they dead shared with the loved one's around them.
At many funerals, gently music, often hymns, are played as the deceased rises to heaven. However, there are some songs that should be left off the funeral playlist, in general. Some of these songs' raunchy lyrics could cause discomfort for family members and friends attending the funeral service, while other songs are just straight up depressing:
1. "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC
Any mention of going to Hell at a funeral should probably be avoided at all costs.
2. "Another One Bites The Dust" by Queen
Considering thousands of people die on a daily basis, it would be my recommendation to avoid this song like the plague when it comes to funerals.
3. "Stayin' Alive" by The Bee Gees
Clearly if you are at a funeral, someone is not alive. I don't see how this song could work at a funeral.
4. "Problem" by Ariana Grande
With one lyric saying, "I got one less problem without ya," this song has more of a "I hate you" feeling, which is extremely frowned upon at a funeral.
5. "Wanted Dead or Alive" by Bon Jovi
This is just morbid. If you play this at a funeral, you're a monster- simple as that!
6. "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang
Ok... this might by worse. At the end of the day, we should celebrate the life that they lived, but this song makes it seem like you're happy they're gone. Avoid!
7. "Happy" by Pharrell Williams
This song is catchy as all get-up, but like "Celebration," it should stay as far away from a funeral as possible.
8. "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor
Clearly not. Sorry.
9. "Bye Bye Bye" by 'N Sync
Although this song is my childhood, things will get really dark if it's played at a funeral.
10. "The Final Countdown" by Europe
Ouch. Just... ouch.
11. "#Selfie" by The Chainsmokers
This is more specific to the new generation... if there is anything worse than a bathroom selfie, it's a funeral selfie. No one wants to see you smiling and posing with a corpse. It's just plain messed up.
12. "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green
Again... ouch. No matter how awful a person has been to you, this is not a song you should wish on your worst enemy.
13. "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult
This is just scary.
14. "Ding Dong The Witch is Dead!" from the "Wizard of Oz"
This is so messed up, but the worst part is the fact that all I could picture is a much of Munchkins dancing around a house with a pair of crushed legs sticking out from underneath it.
15. "Bodies" by Drowning Pool
As creepy and demonic as the lyrics are, Drowning Pool's nu metal sound may send funeral goers running.
16. "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato
This song may be about love, but considering one in every four deaths in the United States are caused by heart attacks, according to the CDC, it is best to stay clear of this song.
17. "Bring Me To Life" by Evanescence
Once a person's gone, they're gone. There is nothing we can do about it.
18. "Burn It Down" by Linkin Park
Avoid during cremation! AVOID. IT.
19. "Dumb Ways to Die" theme song
As entertaining a game this is, this is the last thing you'd want to play if someone died in a stupid way. Plus, the lyrics may cause inappropriate laughter from the onlookers.
20. "Hello" by Adele
Well, we know why he never picked up Adele. Either that, or she's trying to communicate through a Ouija board.
It's obvious that these songs should never be played at a funeral. Unless it's otherwise specified by the deceased (maybe Bye Bye Bye was their favorite song?), I would pick a more solemn song like Somewhere Over the Rainbow or Asleep by The Smiths.
