All of these songs touch base on how police brutality and injustices in America are very prevalent today, especially in wake of the murder of George We, as people, need to acknowledge what is happening in our country and do something about it. We have voices, and these five songs prove it.
1. "This Is America" by Childish Gambino

Childish Gambino starts off this song with a very dreamy beginning. This intro includes happy voices in an acapella composition and background harmonies. It then goes into rap and discusses the detailed issues that people of color face. The tone changes throughout the song really make the song more fascinating and capturing.
2. "Fight The Power" by Public Enemy

Even though this song was released in 1990, the message is still easily applicable to today's issues. The entire "Fear Of A Black Planet" album which this song was on, talks about how corrupt the world is and how many racial injustices are being committed.
3. "Legacy" By McClenney

This song goes into the mind of a black man that just lost his life due to police brutality. This song elegantly captures the potential thoughts of a man murdered because of the color of his skin. The chorus includes the lyrics, "You can shoot me down in the street, but in the music leaves the spirit of my legacy." These words really capture the severity of the issue and the strength of the voices that haven't yet been silenced.
4. "Blk Girl Soldier" By Jamilia Woods
man in black crew neck t-shirt wearing black maskThe empowerment and truth that radiates from this song is amazing. The in-depth descriptions of struggles for black women, in particular, are dissected and explained in this song. It is encouraging and honest and I think that's what makes it such an amazing activism song.
5. "Kapernick Effect" By JAG

Right out the gates, this song is very intense. The title pays homage to the controversial issue of Collin Kapernick kneeling during the National Anthem. It acts out a conversation between a black man and a police officer. Pleading words are the basis of this song. The POV of a black man being arrested and fearing for his life is so eye-opening. The end of the song ends with a gunshot. And unfortunately the case for other real-life scenarios similar to the one depicted in this song.
