Songs That Describe College

"College is like losing your mom in the grocery store for four years." We’ve all heard it and we probably all agree with it. It’s a time full of excitement and confusion. But mostly confusion. We’re even confused about the things that we’re excited about. Yes, college is the best four years of your life, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard. The scariest part about college? Doing it on your own. Not having someone around to hold your hand leaves you lonely and looking for someone who can relate. Lucky for you pretty much every aspect of college life, exciting and confusing alike, are prevalent in music. If you take a second to reflect on your grades, your relationships and pretty much everything in between, I guarantee there’s a song out there that describes exactly how you’re feeling. There are countless songs out there that describe what it’s like to be a college student. It’s like One Direction and Taylor Swift can read our minds.

1. School: "Stressed Out" - Twenty One Pilots

Balancing school with work, clubs, working out, having a social life and I don’t know, sleep, leaves all of us feeling stressed out. It wouldn’t be a normal day in the life of a college student if you didn’t wish you could turn back time. It’s normal. Take a deep breath and accept it. College is stressful (especially when you’re running on more caffeine than you are sleep) but it’s worth every sleepless night and painful hour at the library.

2. Getting Back an Exam: "Crash and Burn" - Thomas Rhett

We’ve all been there. We’ve all spent what has felt like a lifetime in the library preparing an exam that will inevitably tank our grade. There’s nothing worse than walking out of an exam and feeling like your future is plummeting as fast as your grade in that class. But somehow that feeling continuously nags on all college students ever. What’s one exam when your whole life is crashing and burning, right?

3. Friday Night: "Shut Up and Dance" - WALK THE MOON

Cheers to the frickin' weekend. You made it. Everything you are stressed out about? You can forget about it for the next 48 hours. Forget that C you got on an exam you spent days studying for. Forget that you only made it to the gym once that week. Forget that he asked someone else to his date party. The weekend is a blank slate and you have all the energy in the world. Stop talking about it, stop worrying about it, shut up, have fun and dance on a table or something.

4. Saturday Night: "Can’t Feel My Face" - The Weekend

So your 48 hours is almost up but you have zero regrets. Okay actually you probably have a few but I’m sure it was fun while it lasted. You’ve spent countless consecutive hours destroying your body and most of your troopers are probably still going but only because at this point you’re numb. Might as well keep going until you physically can’t anymore. Who cares if you can’t feel your face if you love it?

5. Sunday Morning: "Take Me To Church" - Hozier

Another successful weekend might leave you questioning all of your life choices. A trip to church will probably do you some good.

6. Relationships: "Sober" - Selena Gomez

Unless you’re one of those select few who still does that whole dating thing, something tells me you can relate to what Selena is preaching. Hookup culture in college is nothing short of mind numbing. It’s fun, confusing, hurtful, thrilling, mystifying, destructive, complicated and just downright ignorant. But kids will be kids, right?

7. Friendships: "Stand By You" - Rachel Platten

The relationships you build in college are indescribable. You will meet people who will grow to know you better than you know yourself. Rachel Platten couldn’t have said it better if she tried; you’re going to find people who walk through hell with you even when you can’t find heaven. And people who you will stand by even if their breaking down, you’ll even help them find a way to break through. You will meet people who will never make you feel alone. And it really is a beautiful thing.

8. Friends From Home: "One Call Away" - Charlie Puth

As great as your college friends are, you’re always going to miss your friends from home. The best part of our generation? You are literally always one call away. Maybe it doesn’t feel like you can save the day from hundreds of miles away but you can certainly try. Distance is always going to be hard but it also makes the heart grow fonder. Remember that and remember that it works both ways. When you feel like hope is gone give your best friend a call. I promise it’ll make you feel better, it always does.

9. To Your Parents After a Semester: "Sorry" - Justin Bieber

“I really meant to go to class every day, make dean’s list and do something productive with my life. I don’t know what happened, honest.” College got the best of you, that’s what happened. Say you’re sorry, take the blame, and say it before it actually is too late to say sorry. Make sure you tell them you’ll try again next semester, but don’t be surprised if Bieber’s words still ring true four months down the road.

10. Pretty Much Everything: "What Do You Mean?" - Justin Bieber

Bieber is way too good at this whole reading our mind thing. Let’s be honest, we’re all lost. We’re all struggling to make sense of this world and our place in it. If I had a dollar for every time I caught myself thinking what do you mean, well maybe I wouldn’t be struggling this much.

So yes, you’re lost, we all are. And no, you don’t have your mom. But at least you have several 21st century pop artists who feel you. Just remember that and you’ll never feel alone. Well, okay, you might ... sometimes.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
