Something Unfortunate Comes This Way

And it didn't come from Netflix.

Something Unfortunate Comes This Way

We have been duped. Bamboozled. Hoodwinked. Unfortunately (all puns intended), the trailer is fake. That’s right folks -- the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” trailer, uploaded to YouTube on July 5, is 100 percent fan-made.

Soon after its release, a representative told Entertainment Weekly that Netflix was not behind the mysterious new teaser for the upcoming show. In November of last year, the streaming company acquired rights to the best-selling series of books “A Series of Unfortunate Events” with plans to adapt them as a live-action series. The show is highly anticipated and the trailer -- which seems to capture the mood of the books perfectly -- has only upped the excitement.

“A Series of Unfortunate Events” is a 13-volume series (a regrettable number, right?) written by Daniel Handler, under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, and tells the story of orphans Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire who try to find out the truth of their parents’ deaths while their villainous uncle, Count Olaf, tries to steal their fortune. The books have sold more than 65 million copies worldwide, and continue to charm and enthrall readers everywhere despite the series’ air of unsettling peril and hopeless grief.

Fans of the books may notice that the user who uploaded the video goes by the name Eleanora Poe. Within the canon of the “Unfortunate Events,” Eleanora is the editor-in-chief at the Daily Punctilio and the sister of Mr. Arthur Poe, the person in charge of the Baudelaire orphans, and is first mentioned in “Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography.” Eleanora Poe, the YouTuber, obviously worked very hard on this masterpiece, stitching together numerous details from the books. Just take a moment to marvel at the intricate elements of the teaser.

1. The Gothic Archies.

They wrote songs for every “A Series of Unfortunate Events” audiobook. Though the record shown in the teaser does say "The Gothic Archies" -- the fake teaser is actually set to Dresden Dolls’ “Missed Me,” an excellent choice to convey the eerie tone of the trailer.

2. Birdcage.

Sunny Baudelaire is imprisoned here in “The Bad Beginning,” the first book.

3. Eyes.

Ever present throughout the series, eyes are a constant reminder of the villainous Count Olaf, who hunts the Baudelaires unceasingly. He even has a tattoo of an eye on his ankle.

4. Jars of snake skin.

A reference to “The Repile Room,” the second book, wherein the Baudelaires are sent to live with Montgomery Montgomery who has a reptile collection, which includes the Incredibly Deadly Viper.

5. Violet’s ribbon.

Violet Baudelaire always ties up her hair in a ribbon when she’s thinking her way out of a problem.

6. Nuptial Law book, tickets to the Marvellous Marriage, a marriage license.

All part of Count Olaf’s plan in “The Bad Beginning,” to steal the Baudelaire fortune by tricking Violet into marrying him under the guise of a play. The book is, undoubtedly, how the Baudelaires uncover his scheme.

7. The Daily Punctilio.

All the news in fits of print. Throughout the books, this is the (terrible) newspaper of record in the Baudelaires’ world.

8. “Baudelaire Tragic Fire” headline.

The foundation of the Baudelaire orphan’s tragic journey. While the children are at the beach, their house burns down while their parents are trapped inside.

9. Hotel Denouement cap, front desk bell, room key.

The hotel where the Baudelaires are based for the twelfth book in the series, “The Penultimate Peril.” (The Room 237 on the room key seems to be a reference to The Shining)

10. Jar of fungus, Mushroom Minutiae book.

The Medusoid Mycelium is a deadly mushroom that grows in the Gorgonian Grotto. “A single spore has such grim power that you may die within the hour,” is a quote is found in the eleventh book, “The Grim Grotto.”

11. Photograph of three people.

Perhaps the Quagmire triplets? Characters introduced in “The Austere Academy,” the fifth book.

12. Long cigarette holder.

Belongs to Esme Squalor, villainous girlfriend to Count Olaf, introduced in the sixth book, “The Ersatz Elevator.”

13. Lucky Smells Lumbermill, Paltryville Constitution book, Advanced Ocular Science book, blonde wig, earrings, pearl necklace.

References to the fourth book, “The Miserable Mill,” where the Baudelaires work at Lucky Smells Lumbermill in Paltryville and Klaus visits the local eye doctor, where Count Olaf is disguised as a female receptionist named Shirley.

14. Crow.

Reference to the murder of crows that live in the Village of Fowl Devotees, where the Baudelaires go to live in the seventh book, “The Vile Village.”

15. Klaus Baudelaire’s Glasses.

The middle Baudelaire child’s signature apparel.

16. Books.

Ever present. “A Series of Unfortunate Events” is chock-full of literary references and books are frequently integral to solving mysteries or finding solutions to problems. Klaus is the primary reader of the Baudelaire siblings, with an eidetic memory.

17. V.F.D.

A shadowy organization to which Count Olaf may or may not belong. The organization has an eye as its symbol and the letters V, F, and D make up the eye. Members of this organization all have a tattoo of this eye.

18. “How To Start Fires.”

This is Count Olaf’s favorite thing. He probably wrote the book.

19. The locket encasing silhouettes of the Baudelaire children’s parents.

What? I’m not crying. Are you crying?

20. Filthy dishes, maggots.

Count Olaf is mucky and vile. This is the state of his home.

21. Lake Lachrymose map, mapping instruments, jarred Lachrymose Leech.

References to the third book, “The Wide Window.” The Baudelaire children live near this lake and are advised to wait one hour before going out onto the lake after eating because the leeches will devour anyone who has the smell of food on them. Their guardian in this book, Josephine Anwhistle, lost her husband to the leeches. She likely loses her own life to them as well, when Count Olaf throws her into the lake.

22. Count Olaf’s hand and silhouette.

He’s vile and villainous and creepy and greedy and stupid.

23. Tarot cards.

A reference to Olivia Caliban, the fortuneteller and owner of the Caligari Carnival. In the ninth installment of the series, the Baudelaires must pretend to be freaks in “The Carnivorous Carnival.”

One thing is for sure -- whoever Eleanora Poe is, Netflix needs to hire the YouTuber immediately. The Netflix YouTube channel even left a comment on the video, stating, “Nope, this isn't an official Netflix teaser, but we won't call Count Olaf - THIS IS MOST MARVELOUS.” The Internet has yet to stop buzzing about the teaser. Many fans are optimistic that the enormous amount of positive feedback from the teaser will speedup production of the actual series. I suppose one can only hope there will very few differences between the trailer and the Netflix series.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
