As I think about family and what Supernatural means to me, I remember a specific scene in one of the episodes that really made me stop and think about family and how quirky siblings can be. Sam and Dean were on a case and at the end of the episode entitled “Bad Day at Black Rock," Sam loses his shoe. Now, this might not seem so funny to you but I laughed so hard I fell off my seat. You see, the look on Sam’s face when he realized he lost his shoe was simply priceless and I will tell you why this proves how truly fantastic Sam and Dean’s friendship is. They aren’t just brothers. They are each other’s best friend and do the typical best friend things.

Sam looked devastated without his shoe. I can totally relate to this. My brother, Robert, took me and a friend of mine camping one year way back when I was a teenager. We were walking around in a creek and I lost one of my favorite shoes. Now, this might not seem like a huge deal, but it was. I loved those shoes. They were comfortable and worn in.
My brother rolled his eyes at me and told me I shouldn’t have worn them. I said they were my favorite shoes and what was I supposed to wear? Tennis shoes was his answer. I hate tennis shoes.
Now, leading up to this scene in "Supernatural," Sam and Dean were dealing with a cursed rabbit’s foot. Sam loses the rabbit’s foot and though he was free of the curse, his luck went sour. He stepped in gum and in the process of trying to wipe it off on a grate in the street, he loses the shoe into the sewer. Dean walks away rolling his eyes, the equivalent of what my brother did to me.
The relationship between Sam and Dean is so close, it only makes sense they are close off the set, too. They take vacations together and go to each other’s houses to swim and hang out. Jensen has been instrumental in helping Jared fight his depression, as much as the love from fans. Jensen did not let him give into the depression. He plays football with Jared and they goof off on the set. Their antics are shown on the Facebook pages they run for their fans.
It warms my heart to see such love between friends. I have a few friends like that myself. One is Latasha. She always has the ability to make me laugh when I am feeling down. Jared and Jensen also make me laugh with their crazy antics on and off the screen. Knowing that Jared suffers from depression, fights and keeps fighting with the help of friends, family and fans shows how much humanity has grown in showing the compassion we need to change the world into a better place. I have great admiration for Jared.
Affirmation of this feeling of admiration I have for Jared came when I found out that he married one of the show’s actresses in the romantic style I really dig. Genevieve Cortese, who played a demon named Ruby and got Sam addicted to demon blood for power, stole his heart and they married in 2010. They have two sons, Thomas and Colton. Both boys look very much like their father.
As I was researching for this article, I discovered that not only did Jared and Genevieve meet on the set, but they also got married within just a few months of Jensen and his wife, Danneel Harris, who used to be on "One Tree Hill." They have a daughter named Justice, born this year. Oddly enough, my husband and I got married four days before two of our mutual friends, Mathew and Elizabeth got married. We actually cut our honeymoon short to make it back in time for their wedding. Both my friends Latasha and Elizabeth were in my wedding as was Mathew. Also worth mentioning is that they were in each other’s weddings, according to Bustle.com. They even have huge holiday celebrations together. Their friendship runs as deep as that of Sam and Dean.
They are on the road constantly in the show, rarely taking time for themselves, unless Dean is chasing a lady or Sam is at the library. It only makes sense the closeness portrayed. They even talk to each other like best friends in the show. There are many scenes where they are calling each other names like “jerk." In one episode, Dean put itching powder in Sam’s shorts. The whole episode was henceforth about revenge and one-upping each other.
Sam glued Dean’s hand to a beer bottle and Dean stuck a plastic spoon on Sam’s nose while he was sleeping. I always laugh at this because I do that with my friends as well. I remember one of my friend’s passing out and I drew on them with permanent marker. It’s good to see that television gets the concept of fun in friendships and can portray that in a realistic manner. Though the show is based on, well, supernatural aspects, it gives real life feelings to the relationship that can exist between two siblings.
My brother, Robert, and I call each other names and goof off. I remember one time my brother and I were pretending to be wrestlers in WWF, before it became WWE, and he jumped off of my dresser and landed on me with his knees. Needless to say, I was hurt. He thought it was so funny. Another time, he pulled the old trick of putting a whoopy cushion under my seat and it just had to be at a family reunion. I was embarrassed and everyone just laughed. I love my brother the way Dean loves Sam. There isn’t anything in this world I wouldn’t do for him, within reason that is. I don’t let him go too far. Sam is always there to stop Dean from being overbearing. That’s what I do with my brother.
The relationship, the love and the closeness for Jared and Jensen is as real to them as it is for Sam and Dean. I have never seen a love that strong. Not even in real life. I love my brother, but I would not take it to the depths that Dean has. I think he clings to Sam because he has no other family and is terrified of being alone. He couldn’t have his own family with a wife and kids because he knew his way of life would possibly get them killed and so he refuses to have serious relationships.
I briefly touched on this in my first article. He had a serious relationship with a lady named Lisa. Unfortunately, Crowley kidnapped her and he had to fight to get her back. She was injured and he had Cas erase her memory of him. Not even Sam talks about her to him. He knows how much it hurt him to do what he did, what he let go of. I could say more, but then you wouldn’t have to watch the show and you really have to watch to understand. Because it gets crazy. I shall tell you more…
