Light In The Dark

A poem to lift up those around you

3
Light In The Dark
Charley Czajkoski

You are a light,

A light in a big dark room.

People work to dim you.

They tell you to keep your emotions hidden,

But you are so much stronger.

People work to cover you.

They take thick, black cloth and wrap it around you,

But you are so much brighter

People work to break you.

They throw rocks,

But you are indestructible.

Despite all

The pain,

The hurt,

The distractions,

You continue to shine.

You continue to shine

for that little girl in the corner.

She sits there,

Hugging her knees,

Surrounded by darkness,

But then there’s you.

A light that keeps her staring.

A light that keeps her going.

A light that fills her life.

Don't change.

Don't dim.

Don't shut off.

Don’t break,

For the sake of that girl.

To you it may be too much,

But that’s just what you've grown up thinking.

But to her,

To her you are

Light.

Each and every one of us goes through our day thinking that our emotions don't affect those who surround us, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The way you hold yourself and present yourself to your peers can change their outlook on the day in general. We really never think of how our sadness or our joy could bring up or bring down those around us. If you walk into a room full of sad, depressed people with a smile on your face and happy thoughts in your head, you are going to have an effect on that room.

Lately, I've been working on surrounding myself with those who lift me up. I want to rid my life of the people who spread rumors and cause others pain, whether intentional or not. My friends are a light in my life and provide me with the motivation I need to move forward.

You have no idea how easily you could brighten someone's day. All it takes is a sweet text or a small smile to turn someone's day around. Try to make a conscious effort to share some extra love this month and brighten up someone's day.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
