I consider Calvin and Hobbes two good friends of mine. Growing up, I read the comics and always appreciated Calvin’s witty humor and Hobbes supporting best friend role. I rendered Calvin’s mischievous actions as inspirational and saw his imagination one to be modeled after. Hobbes offered clever comebacks to Calvin’s wild, and slightly ignorant, rants and was always by Calvin’s side, fueling the crazy activities. Still, both Calvin and Hobbes gave brilliant insight among their banter—insights I missed while reading the comics as a little girl.
1. “I wondered, is it better to do the right thing and fail…or is it better to do the wrong thing and succeed?”- Calvin
2. “If good things lasted forever, would we appreciate how precious they are?" – Hobbes
3. “I think our actions shows what’s in our hearts.” - Hobbes
4. “That’s one of the remarkable things about life. Its never so bad that it can’t get worse.”- Calvin
5. “Change is invigorating! If you don’t accept new challenges, you become complacent and lazy! Your life atrophies!"– Calvin
6. “How can something seem so plausible at the time and so idiotic in retrospect” – Calvin
7. “Life is like topography, Hobbes, there are summits of happiness and success, flat stretches of boring routine and valleys of frustration and failure.” – Calvin
8. “Sometimes one should just look at things and think about things, without doing things.” - Hobbes
9. “There are the type of days when you should just give in. Put your pajamas back on, and read comic books in bed with the covers up until the world looks more encouraging.” – Calvin
10. “Things are never quite as scary when you’ve got a best friend.” – Calvin
Calvin may have seemed like a little naughty boy and Hobbes may have seemed like just a stuffed tiger, but their comics offer a little more than just humor. They get us thinking about life, our actions, and of friendship.
