What Freshman Year Of College Taught Me
Summer Eckles

College is full of ups and downs, new experiences, and for most, some of the best memories. My freshman year was just that. I learned so many things not only about myself, but about life in general. Freshman year was definitely more than I expected it to be.

Here is a list of some things I learned during my very first year of college:

1. The friendships you make are genuine

I can tell that the friendships I have made so far are going to be lifelong relationships. The people I have met are some of the best people I have ever known. I did not go a day without laughing, or having someone be there for me. It's amazing knowing when someone asks you, "how are you?" that they actually care about your response. True friends are hard to find, but I know for a fact that the friends I've made so far are going to be there for me forever.

2. I don't need to know what I'm doing with the rest of my life in this very second

Going into college, I thought that the major I chose would have to be what I am doing for the rest of my life. I don't know exactly what I will be doing when I graduate, and that is okay. I have time to figure out what I love to do, and I have so many more classes that will influence my decision. If I feel like my intended major isn't what I love anymore, I can switch it. I have three more years to figure out who I want to be, and I don't need to have my whole life planned out in this exact moment. God will lead me in the right direction.

3. My GPA doesn't define what kind of student I am

I was an A student in high school, and for many reasons, I expected to receive the same grades in college. I learned very quickly that that is not the case. College classes are made to be extremely more difficult, and for some, you can study harder than ever before, and getting an A is still almost impossible. It is still hard for me to except certain grades that aren't what I wanted them to be, but I know that if I tried my best, there is nothing more I could have done. My GPA doesn't define me, or the type of student I am. As long as I do my absolute best, I should be proud of myself, and the GPA I receive.

4. I can be whoever I want to be

College has made me realize that there are so many amazing opportunities in this world. There are new experiences everywhere, and in order to experience them, you need to get out there and see the world. You can do whatever you set your mind and heart to, you just need to have some faith. Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back, and make the best out of every situation life throws at you. Be who God created you to be, and do what your heart desires.

My freshman year of college was honestly one of the best years of my life. I met amazing people who I know will be my friends forever, and I learned more about myself than I knew was even possible. I will be forever grateful for my experiences so far, and I can't wait to see what God has in store for me. I am excited to see what's to come in the next three years.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
