I have trouble falling asleep. Once I'm asleep, I'm usually good for the night. I wish I could be someone who once their head hits the pillow is out for the night but, I've been night person for as long as I can remember. It's when I did the majority of my homework throughout college, thinking, and the only time of day when I feel like I can relax. During college, I'd be in bed as early as 1 AM and up as late as 3:30 or 4 AM. This habit has stuck with me and has often continued since leaving school.
I have tried so many things to help me fall asleep. Melatonin, Advil PM, Sleep Aids, Lavender Essential Oil, Melatonin Patches, and Luna (capsules made with organic ingredients). There are nights I have taken or tried a mix of these pills in an attempt to fall asleep (I am ALWAYS careful of how much I'm taking) so when I read an article on Buzzfeed about a drink that's supposed to make you tired, I knew I had to see if it actually worked.
Since finding out about SOM, I decided I am going to try it (SOM with zero sugar) and see how well it works/lives up to the hype.
What isSOM?
SOM Sleep DrinkAlex Leff
SOM is a cocktail packed with vitamins such as Vitamin B6, Magnesium and L Theanine. It is also vegan, gluten/GMO/preservative/drug/habit forming/allergen-free as well as contains no artificial flavors.
Over the next four days, I am going to keep track of how well I sleep via Fitbit, what it tastes like and how I feel after taking it/in the morning.
The directions are to drink SOM a half an hour before going to bed.
Within the last month, the average amount of sleep I've gotten has been between five to seven hours. While getting an average of seven hours a week doesn't sound too bad, some of the sleep times recorded include naps and nights where I have slept for two or three hours (multiple times during the week). I am hoping that by trying SOM, I can get a better nights sleep and wake up in the morning feeling refreshed.
Thoughts (Before trying SOM):
I'm nervous and very curious about what this drink is going to taste like. For some reason, I think it's going to taste like Red Bull, I am not a fan of Red Bull. Since I ordered the zero sugar option, I don't think it's going to be really sweet. I went with the zero sugar choice because it was lower in calories and slightly cheaper than the SOM with sugar. I also feel that having a sugary drink before bed partially defeats the purpose of trying to fall asleep.
Thoughts after trying SOMI have taken SOM for the last four nights and I think it definitely helped. My average sleep for the week so far is six hours and 27 minutes. While that's still in the five to seven-hour range the only difference is that I am not getting three hours of sleep a night and waking up the next morning miserable and cranky. I'm getting between six and seven hours a night and waking up feeling like I'm in a decent mood instead of being cranky and miserable.
I'm not quite sure how to describe the taste of SOM. It kind of has a weak fruity, watery taste to it. I don't mind that the berry tasting flavor isn't very strong. I was expecting bubbles or carbonation of some sort but even flat I still enjoyed it. Overall I wish it would be better if it were sweeter, but I also ordered the zero sugar variety so that's most likely the reason why it's lacking sweetness and flavor.
Final Thoughts:
I would purchase SOM again. I may not buy it very often, as its pricey, but it is worth it for a good nights sleep I'm actually surprised at how well it worked.
I was slightly disappointed that it took two hours to kick in as opposed to a half an hour like I was hoping. Most of the time, the melatonin, sleep aid or Advil either doesn't work or I have to take more than I should be/a cocktail of different pills (due to the tolerance my body has built up) just to fall asleep. Taking more than the recommended amount or a mixture of medication scares me. I feel like I'm either going to end up forming some sort of addiction or I'm just not going to wake up one morning, so it's nice to have a non-habit forming and safe option.
You can get four cans for $9.99 on Amazon.
