We Listen To A Monster

The demons of social expectations

We Listen To A Monster
Kate Heddleston

Why the hell do we take orders from this absurd thing called “society?”

Nothing is more disturbing than the expectations that society puts us through. Society expects more out of us than our parents do. We are expected to be these already planned out versions of ourselves. This has been like this for way too many years now; there have been societal expectations as far back as the 1600s! Society expects men to be “tough, strong, and emotionless,” while women need to be “skinny, lady-like, and emotional.” But why? Society is an awful idea, almost like a dictator of how we should be, and what is expected of us. Women need to be skinny but not too skinny, thick but not too thick, and also, healthy. We all have to listen to this dreadful medical classification called a BMI, body mass index. I am 5 ft 1 inch, and I am most definitely not that weight I am supposed to be. Not only do my doctors tell me this, but society does too. Our whole life we are smacked in the face with the unacceptable fact that we don’t meet the standards.

Society is the reason for the amount of people that don’t accept themselves. Society makes us not love ourselves. We hate who we are because it isn’t “the correct way to be.” If I burp, it is considered “unlady-like.” I honestly, didn’t know that my bodily function of trying to get rid of gas was not “lady-like.” I am so sorry, I’ll yell at my body for you society.

Society creates this obsessive disorder of image. We are all “supposed” to look a specific way. Not only do we have to pay bills, live life, raise kids, work, cook dinners, make friends, but we also have to meet the most wonderful and “reasonable” expectations of society. Now that is some difficult thing to do. How many people ACTUALLY please society? Most likely not many, it is almost impossible.

Yes, women are expected so much of them. Women basically have to be superwomen, but on the other hand men have it tough to. I couldn’t imagine getting hurt and it not being acceptable to cry, because they would look “weak.” They should be able to just LET IT ALL OUT. Cry like no tomorrow. Men always have to be masculine, as do women have to be feminine. But they too have body expectations. They have to be skinny but not too skinny, have abs but not skinny people abs, be muscular but not too much. Men have such a tough standard, it is so ridiculous.

This “look” that is expected of us, not only comes with height, weight, and behavioral, but also clothing. We are supposed to dress in the style that is “in.” You know, you can’t be an outcast, we are just supposed to go with the flow and all be followers. But, I am honestly so SICK of this societal expectation bullshit. Society pushes us all around like a bully. Society sucks, and I wish it never existed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
