A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.... there was no such thing as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat. A time when relationship problems were addressed up front and let go without the stalking or private-investigating of digital profiles. It leaves me wondering what relationships were like back then. I mean yes, we were alive, but we were 12 years old, so we weren't exactly concentrating on life-long relationships. All girls and guys have a little bit of crazy in them. Just admit it, you know it's true. And honestly, social media has made it that much easier to be a tad more insane when it comes to our relationships.
Relationships everywhere went up in flames when girls were checking Snapchat every day to see who their man was "snapping" with and let me tell you, it wasn't a pretty sight. Guys around the world gave a huge sigh of relief when Snapchat decided to take away the ability to see your fellow snappers 'best friends list'. Girls weren't equally as thrilled. So thanks, Snapchat, for saving a few fights, I guess. But don't worry, other social networks still have stalking abilities and are still spiking trust issues for millennials across the country.
Girls are notoriously masters at overthinking, so issues can raise to whole new levels when they scroll through likes on other girls' Instagram's and see their man's little picture and name in that list. Talk about overthinking to the max. I remember in high school, said-boy had liked one of my best friend's pictures and I automatically thought they were secretly together. Yeah, okay, crazy, I know; but, I can promise you I'm not the only girl that has ever thought those thoughts. I even know guys who freak out when the girl in their life is liking another man's pictures. The hype of the "like" is causing trust issues everywhere, more drama and irrational jealousy in relationships than ever before.
Oh, and then there is always the "favorite" button on Twitter. Yep. We have all been there too. Going through each and every tweet in our significant other's favorites and stalking the crap out of any tweet that comes from the opposite sex. This is where the private investigator side comes out. Everyone loves to find as much information as possible by checking up on the favorites list and continuing onto other people's profiles. Sometimes you can find some relevant information about sneaking around... trust me, I've done it. But again, it just causes our mind to wander in places it never would before the prevalence of social media.
I hate to say that I personally have let social media play that much of a role in my trust within my relationships, but I know that I am not the first and I definitely won't be the last. As much as we love updating our status and posting pictures of the fun things we're doing, we often find ourselves looking into too much detail when we are bored and making conclusions that are just beyond insane. Social media is not healthy for our relationships and is really changing society in a negative way that is getting to our heads a little too much. As my friend Catie would say, "Screw social media, I want to go off the grid."
