Social media is a part of everyday life. We use it to communicate, understand and follow the lives of people we know and do not know. Social media definitely has benefits and pros, however, it also has the ability in creating a culture of self-comparison that in some senses are based on false perceptions.
Let me put it this way – have you ever tried to make your life look more presentable or appealing via a social media platform? I know I am guilty of doing just that. It is too easy to make your life look one way on social media. It is easy to fall into the trap of portraying your life one way on social media.
We can create our social media platforms to appeal to our tastes, interest and ideas. However, sometimes these profiles can be misrepresentative of who and what we really are as people. Why do we do that? Why do we hide behind the fake facade of our Instagrams and Facebook accounts?
Social media is a powerful force and can be used for good, so let’s try and use it for that purpose! Being true to yourself includes being real on your social media accounts. What is the point in lying about experiences via social media? Savor your real experiences, and if you feel like sharing it to the world, do it! BUT, do not elaborate or lie about the experiences. If one of your followers does not think your experiences, ideas or views are 'cool enough,' it is one opinion. Be authentic to yourself and your life.

Being authentic goes beyond how you are day-to-day. It extends to your social media because social media is so ingrained in our lives. Make sure who you are on social media lines up with who you are not on social media. Social media should not be an escape from reality — even though it has become this way for many. We do not want to become a “fake generation.”
Let’s be honest: Not one of us have a perfect life, so why say we do online? Social media should be a place where we can express and share with friends and family the beauty of our lives without the fear of judgment.
Therefore, be authentic and true to yourself on and off the screen.
