Is there a Correlation between Social Media and a Lack of Sleep?
I was reading the news and came across an interesting article that said social media is directly tied into how much sleep people are getting and in turn might be responsible for their depression. There are so many types of social media for them to keep up with these days. They are posting pictures on Instagram, Snapchatting to their stories, liking things on Facebook, and retweeting on Twitter it’s amazing they get anything done. The fear of being left out is crippling to those constantly glued to their cell phones and laptops.
So why is this mostly prevalent in teens? It's because they feel pressured to always keep up with social media. They are always checking their phones and making sure to respond immediately to any messages they receive. I think the same could be said for anyone on social media, but teens lack the self-discipline to unplug when they need to go to sleep.
Now of course the argument could be made since they tested social media users for anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem those teenagers could already have had those conditions without the social media. Some of the data showed kids who were on their phones right before they went to bed tended to have sleeping issues. Some even had sleeping disorders which can truly affect their psyche. Those that are addicted to social media tend to search for approval from their friends for everything in their life. They sometimes compare what's going on in their lives to others they see on social media.
There's a lot of pressure to constantly be great and they are always competing with others on social media so it makes sense that they would stay up all night making sure they responded to their crushes live tweets of his friend trying to eat two whole pizzas more than another girl who might like him. The phone makes it so much easier to lie awake all night hitting refresh. There's really no way to control teenagers using social media, so it will continue to be an ongoing issue and many more studies will be done.
