Moving to New York City can be quite the adjustment. Any disruption in your routine or normality is, especially if you are only 18. The best place to start is the beginning. So, you're new to Manhattan? Here's what you need to know.

  1. Invest in good sneakers, especially when you need to run eight blocks in a minute when you are late to class.
  2. Set extra alarms, just in case.
  3. Always bring an umbrella with you.
  4. Never go anywhere without headphones.
  5. No one cares, use Google Maps. It's worth not getting lost.
  6. Just because the cross sign says you can’t walk doesn’t mean you have to follow it.
  7. If you’re running late, a valid excuse is “The subway was delayed.”
  8. Call your mom. You’ll realize she’s only calling because she loves you.
  9. Wake up early, don’t waste the day in bed.
  10. That being said, don’t be afraid to wear sweatpants and your favorite sweatshirt out and about. Be comfortable; be you.
  11. Put your phone away while walking and take in your surroundings.
  12. Yes, you can ask to pet that dog.
  13. It's okay if you get lost, you'll eventually find your way back home.
  14. Everything takes time, remember that when you feel lonely the first weekend away from home.
  15. Do you want an internship? Apply. You won't get one by sitting on Facebook and complaining about your lack of internship.
  16. Try pilates. Go to SoulCycle. Buy new work out clothes. Try it.
  17. Even if it’s Monday, be excited. Don’t spend the whole week waiting for Saturday, or the whole year waiting for summer. You have the whole day, whole year and whole city ahead of you- go get it.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
