New members of sororities, I know exactly how you’re feeling right about now. The excitement of recruitment week and bid day is over and it’s finally hitting you that you are actually in a sorority – you’re actually a new member. You’re most likely an extremely odd mix of nervous, overwhelmed, and exhilarated. Everyone says that being in a sorority will be the best few years of your life, but how do you get to there? You’re probably thinking, so what now? Since I’ve been in your position before, I have some tips to help you get the most out of your sorority experience.
1. Talk to everyone.
Sure, it’s easy to stick with your friend group that pledged the same sorority as you because they’re familiar and they already know you. But it’s way more difficult and much more rewarding to get outside of your comfort zone and get to know some girls you’ve never met before.
2. Give your opinion in meetings.
Chances are, you’re probably having to attend new member meetings and there’s a greater chance that you’ll have to discuss issues regarding sorority decisions in these meetings. Don’t just sit there in silence thinking to yourself — actually give your opinion. This will give you a way to find leadership opportunities within your pledge class.
3. Eat meals at your sorority house.
Yes, I know it’s intimidating to walk into a kitchen with about one hundred girls already eating with their friends, but this is also the best way to make friends. All of the active members are most likely stoked about you being there and chances are they aren’t going to turn you away. It’s their job to make you feel welcomed and loved.
4. Go to social events put on by your sorority.
Whether it’s a philanthropy event, swap, or date party — go. You will have the time of your life and you will meet so many new girls that are in your sorority. The events are always a good time and you get to know your sisters more personally.
5. Spend time with your sisters outside of sorority events.
This is the biggest one that I can’t say enough about. The way to feel at home in your sorority is to actually do things with the members that aren’t mandatory or just dealing with your chapter. This is the way to actually make friends with these girls instead of just being “sorority sisters” (as awesome as that is). You will find yourself getting much closer with the girls in your sorority if you put the time and effort into building relationships with them and truly getting to know them outside of sorority life.
Yes, finding your home in a sorority is overwhelming and sometimes hard work, but when you truly throw yourself into the chaos and put effort into the girls that surround you, you will find that these next few years really will be the best years of your life with your best friends.
